So I have been wanting to watch this show for a while now but it keeps slipping my mind, lol. So I sat down today and decided to watch it, before discovering I was like 43 minuets to late and only got to see the end of the episode!
So I am going to watch it next week, I don't have BBC3 so I cant see it tomorrow, so I was wondering of someone could catch me up, whats the general idea of the show, stuff like that :)
Now that's tough. It's like being asked to encapsulate the bible.
I think I can touch on the main points which affect the new Who though.
The Doctor is a Time Lord. That was an alien race of kind of like Watchers who watched over the rules of time and space. The story for the new Who says the Time Lord's were destroyed. Left alone Time Lord's are almost eternal. They regenerate into different human forms when their life force fades past a certain point. That's why there can be so many different actors playing the same Doctor Who character. Christopher Eccleston regenerates into David Tennant.
The Doctor is the last of the Time Lord race. He travels through time and space in something called a TARDIS. Stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. A Tardis can take the form of anything. The Doctor's takes the form of an old telephone box. It's small on the outside but gigantic inside. It's almost a life form and has a distinctive essence.
Traveling about in his Tardis the Doctor gets lonely and picks up companions. In the first episode of the New Who he met a 19 year old girl name Rose (Billie Piper). She became his most recent companion, and she's still with him until the end of this season, at which time we expect a new companion to replace her.
Perhaps someone else wants to fill in the finer points.

Thanks N4H, I've also been reading through the Wikipedia article for Doctor Who, and it says there that the doctor can only regenerate 12 times, and it's already been done 9 times so is there only 3 left? And why did the last Doctor regenerate? Was it for storyline purposes or did the actor want to leave the show?

The latest regeneration happened because Christopher Eccleston decided to leave after the first season of the revived show, saying he didn't want to become typecast in the role. Eccleston was already a successful and highly respected actor when he took on the role. He had previously worked with Russell T Davies in the superb two-part TV drama 'Second Coming'. David Tennent, who took over the role of the doctor, had previously worked with RTD in the acclaimed one-off drama 'Casanova', playing the title role.
Russell T Davies is, I think, the best writer working in television at the moment, although not all fans of 'Dr Who' are happy with the way he has revived the show, despite its huge success.
As far as the twelve regenerations rule is concerned, if the show was still successful by that time I am sure a way would be found around it. It was done previously with The Master, a renegade Time Lord and one of the most famous foes of the doctor, particularly during the period of the third doctor, played by Jon Pertwee, when The Master was played by the wonderful and much missed Roger Delgado.
If you want to delve deeper into the 43 year history of the show you might want to visit Outpost Gallifrey, which is probably the most comprehensive dedicated site. Here's a link.
