I was reading up on the Doctor's new companion, and came across this list of the old ones. It's far from complete.

Travelling with the Time Lord

Susan Foreman (Carole Anne Ford)

The Doctor's 15-year-old granddaughter, Susan, joined him in the first series, but after several adventures was left on Earth.

Vicki and Steven Taylor (Maureen O'Brien and Peter Purves)

Discovered on the planet Dido in the 25th century, Vicki joined the Tardis in 1964. Taylor joined them after being rescued from the evil robot Mechanoids.

Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)

Journalist Sarah Jane joined the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee in 1973, when she stowed away in the Tardis and found herself in medieval England.

Leela (Louise Jameson)

A member of the warrior Sevateem tribe, exiled for heresy, Leela forced her way on to the Tardis, to join Tom Baker's Doctor, who resembled the tribe's god, Xoanon.

K9

The robotic dog, voiced by John Leeson and David Brierly, was capable of independent thought and fitted with a handy blaster. The Doctor presented K9 and later models as gifts to three of his female companions.

Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding)

An Australian air hostess, Tegan entered the Tardis thinking it was a genuine police box. She witnessed Tom Baker's Doctor regenerate into Peter Davison, but left after witnessing too much death.

Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford)

A keep-fit fanatic, Mel accompanied Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy and tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade the Doctor to take up exercise and carrot juice.

Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)

Feisty Londoner Rose Tyler was the Doctor's sidekick when the BBC revived the series in 2005, starring with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

Like where's Romana and Ace? Anyone have any favourites?

Edit:

Here's a more complete list with pics.

Ace was the punk-rocker chick who liked to blow stuff up, right? Yeah she was a hoot. I liked Romana too - a female Time Lord who could on occasion out-doctor the Doctor, and this at a time people were complaining there were no strong female characters. My personal favourites though are K-9 tied with Rose.

Which one was Piper?

Edit

Oh duh...what a dummy I am. Billie Piper, right? :)

I was wondering does anyone know was the relationship between The Doctor and Rose in the new series completely different to those of the past? Like it's plainly obvious that that the two are in love, is this a common storyline used with the other companions?

I know we had the ep School Reunion in which Sarah Jane comes back and we know she was (is) in love with the Doctor, but he doesn't have the same feelings for her?

I always felt the old Doctors were a bit detached from their companions. They cared about each other, but it wasn't the same thing.

Billie Piper really sold the Rose character. The way she ran after the doctor with a big grin on her face, or hung on his every word when he rattled off reams of instructions, her enthusiasm and commitment to anything related to the doctor. He was a kind of romance to her, as well as a father and god figure. It was all pretty special, I thought.

This new Martha Jones character has big shoes to fill.

I think the relationships were different in the past because the times were different then. You didn't get so much in-yer-face romantic stuff then. Dr Who was different enough as it was, without breaking new ground by having the brains of the duo fancying the pants off his assistant. Years ago, they were just that - assistants - they didn't take the same sort of up-front role that assistants have with, say, the last 2-3 Dr's.

yeah but now it is sexual chemistry all the way like Scully and Mulder in the x-files! lol but it still makes no sense for the Dr to have a romance with any assistant, but it would be nice for him but impractical! the question is which assistant had the better chemistry ..?(With whichever Dr it doesn't matter)
I did find the currant two had it but that's because my memory of old Dr Who is limited!

I've been watching the Tom Baker episodes. I'm getting fond of Sarah Jane. I hadn't seen the Baker/Sladen eps before. I just knew Sarah Jane from her time with Pertwee, and I only saw a few of those.

I used to just think of her as just being a kind of Lois Lane clone-eye candy character, but she fleshes out with Baker. I got a kick out of the bit in Ark in Space where she gets caught in the conduit, and The Doctor starts insulting her so she'll claw her way out. She does, and when she reaches the end of the conduit The Doctor offers to help her down, at which point she says, "I don't need your help, thank you very much". That said stuff to me about who she was.

Hey, doesn't that new Sarah Jane series start in January?

I know that a special of the Sarah Jane one is being aired on New Years Day, but I don't know when the actual series begins.

It's kind of mysterious. I don't know what exactly this means...

The BBC has also confirmed that The Sarah Jane Adventures, a spin-off from Doctor Who written by Russell T Davies, will be part of its Christmas schedule.

OT: From that link it looks like you guys have some good stuff coming up for the Christmas period - The Doctor Who thing on Christmas day, Billie Piper's going to be in that Phillip Pullman thing, Sarah Jane Adventures, and even that old Christmas favourite ;) Dracula.
