ABC stuck with with its SF series Invasion until the very end, with hopes that it would eventually find an audience, but network president Stephen McPherson told SCI FI Wire that it eventually had to cut the series loose after a dramatic drop in audience.

I'm on ABC's side here, actually. When "Invasion" returned from it's hiatus to finish out the season, ABC promoted the HELL out of this show...very very good commericals at least once during every show! They really did try to get this show a ratings boost.
Unfortunately, they killed it at the beginning by forcing Shaun Cassidy to slow things down (Mariel's body, which was found in episode 7 or so, was originally discovered at the end of the pilot), but after that they DID let him do his thing, and TRIED to regain those viewers. There's nothing really they could have done.
I would have rather them stuck with Night Stalker though, that show was a little more promising for long-term stories.

That's interesting. Didn't know that was ABC's doing, slowing the pace. I think Invasion suffered in that respect. It didn't have quite the same level of complexity of mythology and character as Lost did for that kind of pace...IMO.
If it were FOX, it probably would have been yanked by midseason.
