View Full Version : Shows You Just Don't Get
Is it just me, or does anybody else hear about shows, listen to rave reviews, then check them out, and just not see what all the fuss is about. They're probably really good shows, you just can't force yourself to connect to them.
My list gets longer all the time. This is a partial list of stuff I hear about on this board. Sorry guys, I just can't relate.
Ugly Betty
The L Word
Sex and the City
Alias
Battlestar Gallactica
Smallville
I'll bet everyone has a list like this that just makes others shake their heads.

I never connected with Alias, but I think that has a lot to do with my LFN bias. I do keep trying, tho, and I enjoy the show somewhat...I just don't care about the characters that much. I never got Lost, but again, that's probably my fault, I didn't give it much of a chance. Never got Nip/Tuck, either....and everyone used to rave about that show! I HATE Reno 911...I have a bunch of friends who think that is the funniest show EVER, and I'm like...eh, whatever. Family Guy.....ugh! I've never watched Ugly Betty, tho I love America Ferrera. I really should watch it. I love Extreme Makeover: HE, altho too much of Ty Pennington can cause you to drink. I say that partly in jest, tho, because he does seem to be a nice guy.
So, n4h...what shows do you like?
Yeah that might be more interesting, eh? Like stuff you do connect to versus stuff you don't. The things I'm loving lately are
Dexter
Weeds
Doctor Who
Grey's Anatomy

Weeds is pretty good, and the second season finale was exhilirating, but for some reason I never really care about it when I'm not watching. I think it thinks it's more important/good than it actually is.
Anyway, my personal top shows right now: Lost, Angel, Heroes, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, The Office, and The X-Files. Angel and The X-Files are shows I'm watching on DVD.
I'm also a fan of Blood Ties now, and I enjoyed The Wedding Bells, I thought it was pretty funny.

Both sides of the coin are interesting to me, I was just curious. (read: nosy parker!)
I'm watching Bones, CSI, The Black Donnellys, Buffy, Angel, occassionally LFN, Dirt, Blood Ties (hopefully I can get the full ep this time!), the Riches and I keep missing Robin Hood somehow. I don't know how that's happening. I'm going to watch Drive when it airs. Something may have to give here.

The Riches looks really good, I'm in the process of "acquiring" it. Hopefully I'll be able to watch it tomorrow after work!
The Blood Ties and Wedding Bells I don't know. Are they series?

The first ep was kinda....eh. But it has potential. At the end they showed scenes from stuff that will happen the rest of the season and it looked pretty good! So, I'm giving it a chance. Plus....Minnie Driver (and dude, she looks ROUGH at the beginning, LOL!) and Eddie Izzard. Can't pass that up.
They have a promo for The Riches here -

and I found the Black Donnelys.

If I could find that Blood Ties one, I'd watch it. Still looking.
The promo looks interesting though.

OMG, another series I never learned to like.....Law and Order. That weird sound they make at the end of each vignette just creeps me out.

Huh. Shows I don't relate to....I always just assume I'm a head case cos I couldn't give a rat's ass about most stuff on TV that people care about, lol.
Any kind of televised, organized team sport (football, baseball, basketball, etc, etc, etc....GOD I don't care, lol)
Any crime procedural, CSI, L&O thing....
Any reality show (I kinda liked that Amish kids in the city one for a few seconds).
Any brain dead prime time game show.
I try to get into Smallville...I just find it mostly boring, tepid, hard to distinguish from a soap...I came in too late I guess. Supernatural I wanna really like...but I feel like I cut it slack cos it's genre (though it has gotten better, I admit.)

N4H, The Wedding Bells is a David E. Kelley dramedy on FOX. It's getting terrible reviews but I loved the pilot, it's very silly and off the wall, but had me cracking up. I'll stick with it a while, but since FOX is moving it to Fridays I doubt it will last very long.
Oh, that's the new David E Kelly one, is it? If it's on tomorrow, I'll check it out then.

I never got Sex in the City, DH and House. Heroes is ok but I don't think its as great as everyone else thinks it is.
Lost kinda 'lost' me for a while. It started to believe in its own hype and went downhill. I have enjoyed the newer episodes though and its getting back on track.
I'm pretty easy going when it comes to TV shows really but I never connected with Alias, Sex in the City oh, and The O.C.....can I also put Futurama in there too? 'lol' I really don't get that at all, yet I love The Simpsons :S
I can't think of any other shows that spring to mind right now although there are alot of shows I've never even took the time to watch, like BSG for one or Law & Order, so I don't feel I can really comment on them. :)
There's alot of shows I am enjoying right now though, the newest being 'The Black Donnellys'. :D

It always really surprises me when people don't get Veronica Mars. At least if they've watched season 1 from the first ep and like a few episodes on.. but apparently many people just don't like it..
Ugly Betty
The L Word
Sex and the City
Alias
Battlestar Gallactica
Smallville
Same goes for Battlestar Galactica. I think that show is really really awesome. Especially the characters, also really like the dialogues and sets. I'd understand if people who watched season 1 were annoyed with the shaky hand held camera they sometimes use, and the zooming (zooming? wtf?) but other than that I think this show is great.
The L Word though... I think it really is a gay show. Like I know almost no gay girls who don't watch it, and who didn't love the first two seasons. The characters and the stories (again, in the first two seasons) are pretty great, but the thing is that the creator of the show (Ilene Chaiken) has completely ruined the show in the last two seasons. Some episodes are still great (like the one written and directed by Angela Robinson) but most of it is pretty crappy. So I wouldn't say it's a great show, but it's worth watching if you can relate to it etc.
I guess the shows I don't really get are:
Smallville
Desperate Housewives
Heroes (used to like it but got bored)
and.... Dr. Who..

Hmm, I just don't get Ugly betty - It just seems so over the top.
I also don't get Eureka - Just didn't respond to that show at all.
Most reality Shows, I feel proud that none of the shows I watch are reality shows :)

...which is exactly what it's going for. :)
I don't watch Ugly Betty, because I don't like those one-trick-ponies that are all about shaming the lead characters for laughs. I only watched a little bit of the first ep though.

That's not what Ugly Betty is about. As far as that aspect goes, Betty is becoming stronger, standing up to those people. The show is not about "shaming" Betty at all. I'm surprised you haven't figured that one out, since the show is so widely talked about in the media.
If the show WAS all about making fun of Betty, it wouldn't be getting the critical acclaim.

Shows I just can't 'get into'
Black Donnellys (I don't mind amoral, I'm a Nip/Tuck & Dirt fan, but there's just nothing redeeming or entertaining beyond the guy that's the narrator, it's hard to like a show that centers around dank, dull characters who are just bad people, murders essentially, and who don't seem to have any brains, at all. I mean they're like walking 2x4s)
Law & Orders
Alias
Prison Break
24
Brothers & Sisters
Studio 60
Wedding Bells (and normally I love David E Kelley, though i think it might be all Terri Polo's fault. I really don't like that woman, I haven't ever in anything she's ever been in. People need to stop hiring her, she's NOT GOOD!)

- Supernatural. [I really don't get the appeal of it. I watched an episode and it didn't phase me at all. I wasn't hooked. AND NEITHER OF THEM ARE HOT. kthx.]
- Smallville. [I can't stand Smallville. I can't stand the acting the the storylines are weak.]
- The Black Donnellys. [I don't care for it at all. That's all I have to say.]
- Stargate. [I was actually kinda into it for a while, then I started watching Battlestar. THE END. Compared to Battlestar, Stargate just looks weak.]
- Grey's Anatomy. [I hear people go on and on and on about this show all. The. TIME. I'm sick of it. I've never watched an episode and now I never will.]
- Any reality show. EVER. [This speaks for itself.]
- Dexter. [I've heard it was kinda creepy and fun, but I don't want to bother watching it. It doesn't seem like something I'd watch for the long run.]
- Weeds. [I have friends that won't shut up about this show. Okay, so soccer mom sells pot? I can do downtown and watch the same thing happening in real life. I'm so not amused.]
- ER. [I never got it. EVER. It's BORING.]
- Law & Order. [BORING. At least CSI makes the pretense of having a decent storyline.]
- Charmed. [Boring. Lackluster acting. Weak storylines. That is all.]
- 24. [Caught a few episodes of this, wasn't really into it. To damn dramatic.]
- Ugly Betty. [I heard it was TEH RAWK OMFG, but it just looks like it would put me to sleep.]
I've never understood the attitude of hating stuff one's never seen, but such things are as they are I suppose.
I'm curious about something though. Has there never been a circumstance where you didn't think you'd like something, then you tried it, and it turned out you were mistaken?

Grey's Anatomy and Ugly Betty.
And Ra, it's a little silly to not watch a show and say you're defnitely going to hate it.
Now that I think about it though, I'm a fine one to talk. I have all these superficial reasons for not wanting to see something.
For example I won't go see the stage musical Cats, because I hate that drop-the-soap pose they use where they stick their bums out, and arch their backs. Actually that's another reason I have no interest in seeing a Rolling Stones concert - Mick Jagger poses when he performs like he's auditioning for Cats.

Yeah, actually I remember seeing the early ads for Desperate Housewives before it aired and thinking it looked like some crappy, wanna be Stepford Wives thing or something. And I wasn't even sure I wanted to check it out, but as it got closer to airing, the ads showed a little more, and I thought, maybe it could be funny. One episode and it was so funny. *L* Totally liked it. It's not the best show or my very favorite. But it's pretty damn good and fun. Nice camp factor, usually nothing too horribly dank and serious going on, which sometimes it's really nice to have that in a show. :)

I guess I'm just one of those people that hates things they've never seen, then.
It takes a lot for me to get into a show. Grey's never really appealed to me in the fact that it's a doctor drama, which has never in the history of ever been able to garner my attention for more than three seconds. The same for Weeds.
It's also incredibly hard for me to watch TV these days, so I don't bother with things that look like they could possibly get boring.

So, you're saying that something has to be truly extraordinary to catch your attention? I can understand that.....

I can pretty much get into any show, granted there are some that completely eclipse others. I can't really watch reality t.v. though. Probably due to the fact reality TV is responsible for "Angel", being cancelled. If I want reality I'll go outside.
