Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) -- Iranian authorities have recently arrested more than a dozen squirrels for espionage.

"In recent weeks, intelligence operatives have arrested 14 squirrels within Iran's borders," state-sponsored news agency IRNA reported. "The squirrels were carrying spy gear of foreign agencies, and were stopped before they could act, thanks to the alertness of our intelligence services."

Iran claims the rodents were being used by Western powers in an attempt to undermine the Islamic Republic.

Iranian police commander Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqadam confirmed the report, saying that a number of squirrels had been caught bearing foreign spy gear within Iran's borders.

The rodents were taken into custody 2 weeks ago but few details have emerged about the incident. "I have heard about it, but I do not have precise information," said the police commander.

Iran has recently stepped up its anti-espionage efforts against the West. There have been no other documented uses of rodents in the past.

Giant 'corpse-eating' badgers terrorise Iraqi city

From correspondents in Basra
July 11, 2007 05:37pm

THE Iraqi port city of Basra, already prey to a nasty turf war between rival militia factions, has now been gripped by a scary rumour – giant badgers are stalking the streets by night, eating humans.

The animals were allegedly released into the area by British forces.

Local farmers have caught and killed several of the beasts, but this has done nothing to dispel the rumour.

Iraqi scientists have attempted to calm things down. However, the story has spread like wildfire in the streets of the city and the villages round about.

Mushtaq Abdul-Mahdi, director of Basra's veterinary hospital, has inspected the corpses of several badgers and tries to reassure Iraqis that the animals are not a new post-war arrival in the region.

“These animals appeared before the fall of the regime in 1986. They are known as Al-Ghirayri and locally as Al-Girta,” he told AFP. “Talk that this animal was brought by the British forces is incorrect and unscientific.”

Not everybody is convinced.

“I believe this animal appeared following a raid to the region by the British forces,” said Ali Mohsen, a farmer in his 40s from Karmat Ali, near the air base used by the multinational force.

“As we are close to the airport, they probably released this animal into the area.”

British troops have been based in Basra since the 2003 US-led invasion overthrew dictator Saddam Hussein, and the 5500 that remain still face the threat of Shiite militias battling for the region's oil resources.

They also have to battle the Iraqi rumour mill, as locals are quick to blame them for almost any calamity that befalls the area – including an apparent plague of vicious badgers with long claws and powerful jaws.

British army spokesman Major David Gell said the animals were thought to be a kind of honey badger – melivora capensis – which can be fierce but are not usually dangerous to humans unless provoked.

“They are native to the region but rare in Iraq. They're nocturnal carnivores with a fearsome reputation, but they don't stalk humans and carry them back to their lair,” he said.

Both the scientists and the soldiers agree that the badger ought not to be a danger to humans, but so far they have failed to reassure the populace.

“I was sleeping at night when this strange animal hit me on my head. I have not seen such an animal before. My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer,” Suad Hassan, a 30-year-old housewife said.

“It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey. It runs so quickly.”

Cell phone video of the badgers circulating in Basra shows a stocky skunk-like animal with long front claws.

The honey badger, or ratel, is known as a brave predator capable of killing a cobra. It weighs up to 14kg.

Sattar Jabbar, a 50-year-old local farmer from Abu Sakhar north of Basra, believes the badger can tackle even large prey.

“I saw it three days ago at night attacking animals. It even ate a cow. It tore the cow up piece by piece. I tried to shoot it with my gun but it ran away into the orchards. I missed it,” he said.

Wanna see video of the badger.

But HERE'S (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULrK_PK0cXw&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fabuaardvark%2Etypepad%2Ecom%2Fab uaardvark%2F2007%2F07%2Fthe%2Dgiant%2Dman%2De%2Eht ml) the video Al Jazeera released of the giant beast.

Apparently the actual name for these animals are Ratels (Mellivora capensis).

The squirrels, I don't know... it's possible. Doesn't the American Navy use dolphins and seals. Didn't the CIA get caught doing secret experiments on Canadian mental patients with hallucinatory drugs? I guess I should hit Snopes, and check those stories out.

If you google the squirrel story, just a handful of news sites picked it up. But you never know.

I think Season 7 of 24 should involve squirrels. Or chipmunks maybe...

This just in.

Iranian Intelligence (yeah I know, oxymoron) has leaked exclusive pictures of the Zionist rodent commandos.

No it was the American Army doing it to their own soldiers. They would give them a hit of acid and get them to do the obstacle course. During basic training we watched the movies as it was part of the "don't do drugs" and here's why. They were looking for ways to use it as a chemical attack to cripple the enemy force.
What the Americans did was spray Agent Orange & Purple (Agent White also, I think) at a base in New Brunswick to see the destructive effects it had on foilage for the Viet Nam war. Canada denied this went on for decades but has recently admitted that yeah they allowed the Americans to spray for almost 10 years back in the 60's & 70's because a lot of people are dying from cancer in the area. Both military and civilian. Big lawsuit etc going on and the Canadian government is doing what they usually do...stall because eventually everyone will die and then no one will sue them.

How about squirrels gathering intel for Jack on badgers? But Jack's pet squirrel is kidnapped so he has to go in to save it. But the squirrel breaks free but is then cornered by a cougar in the mountains?
Oh GB you have hit a goldmine of ideas for season 7!!!lol

I'm pretty sure we're talking about 2 separate incidents. The stuff I'm talking about happened in a Montreal hospital, and it was the CIA. Here's the Google page.

Thanks N4H we were talking about two different incidents. Thanks for posting the link.
Makes you wonder though what else governments have done to us un-suspecting innocent civilians?

Sky News have obtained a pic of one of the British squirrels...judging by the red beret, I'd say he was from the Parachute Regiment :)

Iran busts 'spy pigeons' near nuclear site

Oct 20 05:11 AM US/Eastern

Security forces in Natanz have arrested two suspected "spy pigeons" near Iran's controversial uranium enrichment facility, the reformist Etemad Melli newspaper reported on Monday.

One of the pigeons was caught near a rose water production plant in the city of Kashan in Isfahan province, the report cited an unnamed informed source as saying, adding that some metal rings and invisible strings were attached to the bird.

"Early this month, a black pigeon was caught bearing a blue-coated metal ring, with invisible strings," the source was quoted as saying of the second pigeon.

The source gave no further description of the pigeons, neither their current status nor what their fate will be.

Natanz is home to Iran's heavily-bunkered underground uranium enrichment plant, which is not far from Kashan.

The activity is the focus of Iran's five-year standoff with the West, which that fears it aims to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran vehemently denies the charge.

Last year, Iran issued a formal protest over the use of espionage by the United States to produce a key intelligence report on the country's controversial nuclear programme.

This one seems slightly more credible, not sure.

It's the "invisible strings" bit that cracks me up.....

Man, whatever it is they're taking, I'd sure like some.
