View Full Version : Question For Buffy Fans

For the people who watched Buffy obsessively during it's run...is there a new show now that you consider a Buffy substitute? That you watch every week and you constantly pray that it will last as long as Buffy did?

I have to say - I didn't start watching Buffy and Angel unti late 2003/early 2004, but I've been to a lot of boards for the shows and I know how loyal the fans are.

Right now the only shows that would be like that for me would be "Lost" and "Supernatural" - I never, ever miss them and I would freak out if they got canceled any time soon...I was hoping that "Point Pleasant" could become that for me, but FOX made sure that wouldn't happen...same with "Night Stalker".

Interesting question, Lost would be, I follow that religiously as I did with buffy. I was hoping Angel was going to go on for a few more years, And I hoped Point Pleasant was going to take off as well. Then Hex, which is still going and that deserves to go on for a few more years!
Outside of the Genre that Buffy would fall into I watch The O.C., One Tree Hill, Grey's Anatomy, Veronica Mars and C.S.I(Vegas) Religiously every week :)
And I am looking forward to Supernatural :) Which I know will last for 1 season at least.

Supernatural is definitely getting a second season. It's the highest-rated new show on The WB this season and is getting higher ratings than Buffy and Angel did.

I love Hex as well, but only up to 13 episodes a year? That really sucks. I wish they'd order 22.

And I like both The OC and One Tree Hilll. Haven't seen Veronica Mars in forever. I hate Grey's Anatomy and CSI is extremely mediocre.

Not that many UK shows get an 22 episode season, it usually around 13. Not sure why, lol.

Grey’s Anatomy and CSI is extremely mediocre.
I randomly tuned into GA and I have become addicted to it! I think the characters and storylines are amazing!

lol. On that last quote I was saying I didn't like Grey's Anatomy. And that CSI was the mediocre one. The way you quoted it makes it look like a made a grammatical error, haha.

Supernatural and Bones are my substitutes for B&A. Night Stalker was third on that list, but ABC in all their "wisdom" took care of that selection.

I boycotted television for a long time after the boneheaded cancellation of "Angel", but was convinced by a friend to give some of this year's new shows a try. So far so good.

Quiet Cool....you don't watch LOST?! Have you at least given it a try? (From the beginning).

In case you haven't heard Sci Fi is airing all produced episodes of Night Stalker next year. (yay!)

I don't doubt that "Lost" is a great show...but I never caught it from the beginning, and I never watch a show if I missed it from the start. I'll go the DVD route eventually. That was the case with the Buffy series. I never once saw a Buffy eppy until Season Four, after I had caught up to it from watching the DVDs.

As for Night Stalker...yes, I know about the Sci-Fi reruns, but it really means nothing to me, as the show is still CANCELLED, lol. If they were going to be CONTINUING the series, I'd be excited. :p

For me the dark gritty and more grown-up drama of Angel was replaced by Nip/Tuck.

Whereas the perkier much lighter Buffy found a worthy subsitute in Gilmore Girls.

For my supernatural needs, I turn to Hex.

I think the fact that 2 shows simply can't cover B/A says enough about the quality of the latter ;)

Definitely Lost. I'm so enthralled in this show and I've only been watching since the premiere of the second season. I can only HOPE it lasts as long as Buffy and Angel. Otherwise, I've lost all hope in television ...

I think it'll only last five years.

You see me and you are very very similar. At the moment Lost has taken the place of B&A for me. I can't miss any of it and desperately try to get hold of the next season!

When B&A ended I was obsessed with Charmed for a while but the novelty has worn off. Other than these two, I am eagerly awaiting Supernatural. I hope we get it soon. I also loved Point Pleasant and me and my friend watched it religiously till it was cancelled. We still stay up to watch it on E4 though!

Non Buffy Genre would be basically the same as BEG's. I love The OC, One Tree Hill, Smallville, Veronica Mars, Grey's Anatomy. I think they have good characters and I do look forward to them coming out! The OC is back in January!!! I have cheated though and seen the first 4 episodes!!!

Nope, I'm a Lost virgin. This is my first season with it. Which just goes to show how amazing these writers are.

You desperately need to buy season one on DVD.

Yeah, I'm definitely pinching pennies in order to get it. I've heard the pilot is amazing.

Oh, it is. In my opinion the best episode of the series so far. (still) You should also consider checking out Alias if you've never seen it. It's just as addicting as Lost.

buffetofsporks
12-14-2005, 05:23 PM
Yeah, I've heard great things about Alias, but haven't really ever sat down and actually watched it. I'm hoping to get some extra money for X-mas, so I'll definitely look into buying the DVDs for that one, too.

I did the exact same thing I started watching it all the time, new eps and repeats (Which are on everyday on Living TV)

Same, lol. I only watch the new eps and even then I wouldn't mind missing one.

I also loved Point Pleasant and me and my friend watched it religiously till it was cancelled. We still stay up to watch it on E4 though!
Me too. I introduced a friend of mine too point pleasant, She watched Buffy and Angel, and We both sat down and watched both seasons of Dark Angel together, shows like that work so well when you watch them with someone and all together! But now we are waiting for PP on DVD and we are gonna sit there and watch it from start to finish in a big marathon! Which is why I have avoided watching it on E4 on Wednesdays, so hard to do, lol.

Yep I watch them on Living every night when I get in before Hollyoaks starts. I love it when it's Season 1 -3 although my favourite Season 5 episode was on tonight. It was the one where Phoebe keeps trying to save Miles! I love the end when Piper goes back in time to stop Phoebe and Paiges death. The way Piper looks so hurt just gets me everytime!!!

Well the last epi we both saw together was Swimming with Boyd! Unfortunately we watched the show last week on E4 and I'm hooked again I have to see it tonight. We missed the episode in between which was slightly confusing but it was still good!

Nope, I haven't seen the last 2 or 3 eps! I am saving them for my marathon, I could easily get them but I decided to keep it till Point Pleasant-a-rama lol! I know I'm insane but the last 2 or 3 hours are gonna be a shock fest, can't wait!

Hm, to answer the original question.. I don't have a substitute for BtVS, cause of two reasons: 1. There's no show I could love as much as BtVS 2. There's no show as good as BtVS

The show that has come closest to being this good though, would be Veronica Mars. I am also a huge addict when it comes to The L Word and The OC, but they're not great in the same way as BtVS (and Veronica Mars)..
Honestly though, BtVS will just always be the best one for me, it's my religion, and I'm fine with that.. I love other TV shows but I'm not looking for another one to obsess over like I do/did with Buffy...

I know what you mean, while I do watch Lost religiously I don’t care about it in the same way as Buffy, Buffy was special, and I don’t think there will be a show that can completely fill that void!

Well, for me, I know there won't be another show like Buffy. But I still have Buffy, so it's okay. Inever watched it when it was on TV, I just bought the DVDs and then the show was mine, you know, and it will be forever :)

As much as I loved Buffy...there's always going to be a show that's better. Maybe it'll come along ten years from now...but it will come.

If I could choose to have either Angel back so it could have a couple of more seasons to end properly or Point Pleasant back...I'd choose Point Pleasant. I don't mention Buffy in that because it got proper closure, but Angel is kinda the same thing. :D

Since there's no more Buffy, I watch Veronica Mars. That show is so good and I just recently started watching it. It also helps that Charisma is in it.

Instead of Angel, I watch Bones now. That show is a lot better than I thought it was gonna be. I don't usually watch shows like that but Bones got me really intrested, I guess because the characters all interact very well.

Agree. I'm not a huge fan of David Boreanaz, but I like Bones.. It's like the only of those new shows with BtVS actors that I really watch.. Except for How I Met Your Mother.. Oh and Reunion of course.. But Bones is probably the one I watch mainly cause it's a goo show while I watch the others mainly cause of the actors..

Lost is my current obsession, a truly fantastic series.

I'm also a really big fan of the two Stargate series but that was true (for SG-1 at least) back when Buffy and Angel were on. It and Farscape were the only two shows that came near to my love of Buffy and Angel.

Big fan of 24 too. Going to give Supernatural a look when it starts on ITV2 later next year.

Of course, the fact that my Buffy, Angel and Firefly DVDs probably get as much play as anything still on TV does says an awful lot.

Never took to Hex though, just couldn't get into it, and the less said about Charmed the better, buy you probably all know my opinion there! :D

Been watching Bones, Supernatural and Charmed (although it has pretty much been lame this season). Other than those, the only ones I dont miss are the CSI shows.

I don't think anything will be able to replace Buffy for me. Roswell might have, but cancelled.

Hex and Grey's Anatomy I would say are the shows I love the most at the moment, but it's still not at the leve that Buffy was.

I never really got into anything. Nothing could replace Buffy for me, not even Angel.

I do watch Lost, but I'm not obsessed with it. I won't miss an episode, but I'm not too sure that the writers really know what their doing besides scratching their heads along with us, because they don't know where they are going.

I do like Project Runway. That would be cool if it continued without a million month hiatus.
