Actors Offer Their Take on 'Moonlight' Matters

September 15, 2007

After much shuffling and re-shuffling of onscreen personnel for the upcoming vampire show, Moonlight, the cast now seems to be complete and final. The heir apparent to recent fang-related television hits like Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is set to debut on CBS come September 28.

Ahead of its premiere, some of the stars of the new series recently shared their thoughts on various aspects of their character, casting and Moonlight in general.

British actress Sophia Myles is no stranger to the vampire genre. She became a familiar face and name following her stint on the blockbuster hit, Underworld and its sequel, Underworld: Evolution. She also took a turn as Lucy in the 2006 television adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Although the Underworld franchise, which starred fellow U.K. import, Kate Beckinsale, was already a huge vehicle for Myles, she remained admittedly overwhelmed when she first got the call to join Moonlight.

“I got a wonderful letter from the producers not long ago asking me to come and join them on this amazing adventure to make this series,” she said. “It was like finding a golden ticket in a Wonka Bar. I couldn't believe it. I'm just in a kind of haze of just even just the fact that Warner Bros., the studio, is my office now. I just keep pinching myself. I can't get my head around it so I'm really looking forward to living here. It's a huge deal for me. Especially like the thing is in England at the moment, our government isn't putting any money into the film. We don't really have an industry in England anymore. American television, especially in the last few years, it's on a par, if not better than a lot of movies that are out there at the moment. You have to, as an actor, travel where the work is so here I am.”

Myles plays an ambitious, young reporter on the trail of some unusual deaths and murders. She catches the eye of Moonlight's lead character, the vampire detective, Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin).

From the modern day potential love interest of Moonlight's main man, we move on to the woman responsible for siring Mick six decades ago. Hawaiian born Shannyn Sossamon plays Coraline, the female bloodsucker who wed and turned Mick St. John 60 years ago. She offered her thoughts on their complex and macabre relationship.

“I don't think she did it maliciously,” Sossamon revealed. “She was madly in love with him, maybe the most in love she'd been since she was human. I think she did it out of desperation because she didn't want to lose him. So she turned him into a vampire in the ‘50s. He didn't know she was a vampire and he's pissed. Basically everyone's just calling her the ex-wife from hell. The relationship then becomes like classic tumultuous, back and forth, heated, chemical, unhealthy dynamic. It's a femme fatale sort of thing.”

Finally, former Veronica Mars mainstay, Jason Dohring, shared his experience as a last-minute replacement for original pilot cast member, Rade Serbedzija.

“From what I know it's obviously very much changed,” Dohring said. “It kind of sucks because it was another guy's job but obviously it's great. This cast is pretty unbelievable. I'm the youngster and I have to play 400 years old so I have to have seniority over all these people that I really respect. That's going to be my trick to be able to play that.”

Shannyn is awesome. And the reason I got interested in seeing this show. Jason Dohring is painfully overrated and I hated his character on "Veronica Mars". (His relationship with Veronica was the ONLY thing I disliked about that show.)

Sophia Myles...I don't even remember seeing her in anything.

She was in Mansfield Park, Underworld, Tristan & Isolde, and the BBC Dracula. :) She was also in the Girl in the Fireplace episode of Doctor Who, and is dating David Tennant :)
