Wikipedia Biography

Freema Agyeman (born 1979 in Finsbury Park, London[1] ) is an English actress whose first notable appearance was in the ITV soap opera Crossroads. She is best known for playing medical student Martha Jones, companion of the Tenth Doctor in the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who.

Background
Agyeman grew up on the Woodberry Down council estate.[2] She is of Iranian and Ghanian parentage. Her mother, Azar, and her father, Osei, divorced when she was a child. She has a younger brother, Domenic, and an older sister, Leila.[2] She attended Our Lady's Convent, a Catholic school in Stamford Hill and the Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington. She studied performing arts and drama at Middlesex University, graduating in 2000.[2]

Career
Freema Agyeman secured the part of Martha Jones after an audition which she had been told was for a guest role in Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood. Agyeman had previously portrayed Martha Jones's cousin Adeola Oshodi, who was killed by the Cybermen in Doctor Who episode "Army of Ghosts". During her first season in the role of Martha, there was a tabloid article that reported she had been axed from the show, but despite her character's departure from the TARDIS in season finale "Last of the Time Lords", the BBC have confirmed that actress and character will return in series four for five episodes, after appearing in three episodes of Torchwood.[3]
Freema Agyeman can often be seen on The Bedtime Hour on CBeebies reading the story shortly before 7pm.

Trivia

From TV.com

Freema also appeared in the final episode of Mile High as a Fresh Air Cabin Crew member in the near future, talking to Janice Steele about the famous crash which killed Leanne. This episode closed down the series as all its main characters had left according to Janice and Will.

Freema had also auditioned for a role in Doctor Who called Esme. This character was originally written into the episodes Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel but was abandoned to explore Mrs Moore much further.

Russell had joked about making her companion Martha Jones a lesbian but decided not to go there.

Freema appeared on the cover of "Doctor Who Adventures" Issue #12.

From PlanetCrossroads.co

“Freema Agyeman may sound like a relative newcomer to the acting profession but it's so far from the truth. She went to Middlesex University and came away with a BA Honours in Performning Arts and Drama and spent the summer of 1996 in a theatre summer school. Also, Freema studied at Radford University in Virginia, in the United States of America. Since then she has acquired a huge list of theatre spots, film and dance credits to her name. She is a member of the Islington Arts Factory.
This girl is also very flexible, with an ear for accents (her native one is London) and can do Australian and Liverpudlian accents as well. She can also do basic martial arts, horse riding and basic gymnastic skills! Don't cross her!”
