All the Gory Details
Joss, often mistaken for Josh, Whedon was born on the 23rd of June in 1964. His grandfather wrote for the classic shows Leave It to Beaver and The Dick Van Dyke Show. His father wrote for Captain Kangaroo and The Golden Girls. Born in New York as Joseph Whedon, Joss was the youngest of three boys. His parents divorced when he was nine. When his mother, a teacher, went on sabbatical in England, Joss went with her. Intending on only being there for six months he stayed for three years, attending Winchester College, founded in 1382. After Winchester, Joss attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut and graduated in 1987. Joss headed to Los Angeles where he got a job as a story editor on the sitcom Roseanne and eventually wrote for the show. Later he both wrote and co-produced the NBC show Parenthood. In 1992 his screenplay about a blonde cheerleader who fought vampires, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was released on the big screen. Though it wasn't terribly successful, Joss continued to work and was often called upon to doctor scripts. He co-wrote the Pixar hit Toy Story and was nominated for an Academy Award for his work. In 1996 Joss was able to revive Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this time as a one hour drama. The character, influenced by X-Men's Kitty Pryde, was relocated to the small town of Sunnydale, California. Starring former soap actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, the show premiered in the spring of 1997 as a mid-season replacement on TheWB network. The show was a hit and brought critical acclaim to the fledgling network. Joss was nominated for an Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the episode Hush. Ironically, the episode featured 28 minutes with no dialogue. He further stretched his talents on Buffy by writing a musical episode with over 10 original songs. The episode aired during the sixth season and is a favorite among fans. In 1999 Joss and David Greenwalt created the show Angel, which brought the character of the same name from Buffy's world in Sunnydale to Los Angeles. Airing after Buffy the Vampire Slayer initially, Angel was also a hit. Buffy spent five seasons on TheWB before the network decided to not renew it. However, the show did not end because UPN decided to pick it up and it lasted two more seasons before it ended in May of 2003. Angel continued for five seasons and over 100 episodes before TheWB decided to cancel it in 2004. In 2002 Joss created another show, separate from his Buffy universe and set 500 years in the future. A combination of western and fantasy, Firefly debuted in September 2002 on the FOX network. However, the show did not do well and was canceled after 11 episodes had aired. The show was brought to DVD along with three unaired episodes. Very passionate about the show, Joss refused to let it die. His passion, the passion of Firefly fans and strong DVD sales caused Universal to take notice and they greenlit a feature film continuing the story. The film, Serenity, marked Joss' feature film directorial debut and was released in September of 2005. Joss will next write and direct a film based on the Wonder Woman comics, as well as a film called Goners. Joss created an original comic telling the story of a slayer far into the future called Fray. He has also written the X-Men title Astonishing X-Men. In addition to those, he has also carried on his Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly/Serenity worlds in comic book form. Married to Kai Cole, Joss lives in Los Angeles. The couple welcomed their son Arden to the world in 2002.

Net-Bits

Early Childhood

“Even as a small child, Buffy writer/creator/executive producer Joss Whedon knew his interest in super heroes, horror stories and other twisted tales was out of the ordinary. ''It was deeper, more consuming than [with] other children,'' he says. 'While they were outside playing, I was indoors, fascinated by a large stack of comic books.' “

Upon Graduation

“Whedon studied film at Wesleyan in Connecticut, where he graduated ''broke and without a job prospect ... I wanted to write for TV, so I wrote a sickening number of TV specs, most of which were returned to me.'' After a year of sending his work around, he found success with a script he wrote for Roseanne. A year later, he quit the show after selling a movie script. “

Toy Story

A tough story to crack, Toy Story languished for years at Pixar as they attempted to overcome some serious story issues. Co-writer Andrew Stanton credits Whedon for helping to get the film into shape, and we all know what the end result was... okay, I'll tell you – a classic

Joss Discussing Buffy the Movie

JW: Yeah, but, you know -- I didn't know at the time that it would all get away from me. But it did. That character had been brewing in me for many years. I finally sat down and had written it and somebody had made it into a movie, and I felt like -- well, that's not quite her. It's a start, but it's not quite the girl. I even drew her at one point, long before I ever finished writing it. Somewhere I probably still have that. My original idea was a lot less silly. It had funny, but it was a much more serious action horror movie with the funny. Actually it was pretty gross, too. It wasn't just straight on comedy, but that's how the film came off.

The Birth of Buffy the Series

JW: Well, I never intended to. Gail Berman, who is now running the Fox Network, was an executive at Sand Dollar, who had produced the movie and sort of had a share in the rights to the movie. Since before the movie came out, Gail had been saying, "This is a series. This is a series." And everybody said "Ha Ha Ha. You are a fool!" And then about four years after the movie came out, she got some people interested in developing it. Somebody eventually said, "you are not a fool!" Then, when they came to me, they had been offered to do it like a Power-Ranger type show. It was supposed to be half-hour, you know, afternoon show.
SE-G? Sorta chop-socky daytime action?
JW: Yeah. Like that. I thought it would be really fun to do one that was sort of tongue-in-cheek and deconstructed itself. So I sort of got into that idea. And as I developed it more, it turned into a rather serious drama, and I realized, "I don't want to make fun. I want this to be real."
SE-G: And those guys were OK with that?
JW: Yeah, there was some struggle about whether we could pitch it as an hour drama, but we went to the WB and they were like "Yes, please." That was sort of like somebody came along and kissed Sleeping Beauty Joss and said, "You can have your dream back now."
The classic thing is that I wanted it dark. I mean, Luke Perry even wanted it dark. When we first met, we had the same idea -- "This is so cool! This is going to be so cool!" We were both in it with the same idea in mind, I think, and as it became clear what kind of movie was being made, we were both going "Oh, man! This isn't Near Dark enough at all."
But, my wife, at the premiere, was sort of like "Well, you know honey, maybe in a few years, you could make it again, the way you wanted to." (laughs) I went ," Oh, ha ha, honey, that doesn't happen in Hollywood! You're so naive!" Well...it really doesn't.
JW: I always wanted the character to be an icon. I wanted her to be a hero that existed in people's minds the way Wonder Woman or Spider-Man does, you know? I wanted her to be a doll or an action figure. I wanted Barbie with Kung Fu grip! I wanted her to enter the mass consciousness and the imaginations of growing kids because I think she's a cool character, and that was always the plan. I wanted Buffy to be a cultural phenomenon, period.”

On X Men

* SE-G: That's true. X-Men was big last year. I know you're historically a big X-Men fan, so what was that like for you?
JW: Well, I've got a tortured history with that movie. I had written an entire draft of it that was thrown out.
