Sock It to You: Reaper's Tyler Labine Dishes on the Show's Fate and More

"Reaper is actually way better than Chuck."

These were the highly controversial words that a certain TV actor (not on either show) uttered to me at an event last week, followed by this plea: "You have to try to save it."

Clearly, them's fighting words! (And you fans can feel free to duke it out in the comments section below.) But in my Chuck-and-Reaper-adoring estimation, one thing is certain: Reaper is truly awesome. And it's getting even better with every passing episode.

Case in point: Last week's episode—in which resident reaper Sam started to learn that his girlfriend Cady was a wee bit cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs (she's actually the devil's spawn) and Bert "Sock'" Wysocki had a meltdown over his mother's surprise marriage to an Asian cowboy—was so funny and surprising and well written, it was one of the best episodes of any series all season long. Sock in particular had me laughing so hard I actually fell off the couch.

So I rang up Mr. Sockalicious Socky Pants himself, Tyler Labine, to chat about what's next and how he's feeling about the chances of a season two. Read on for the scoop...

Hi, you kill me. That last episode with you being distraught over your mom getting married was fantastic. Well done.
Oh, thank you. I loved that. I really wanted them to have my mom come back more, because it’s just nice to see how a person like Sock becomes Sock. It had to start somewhere. So it makes sense that it would start with a crazy-ass mom like that.

How are you feeling about the show? You're back shooting now, correct?
Yeah, we’re back in Vancouver. We’ve been back for, like, four days. It feels good.

How did it feel to take that big break right in the middle of the first season?
It was not cool. It would’ve been nice if it was a planned hiatus that we had and that everything was honky-dory. But it was scary because of the strike. We didn’t know if we were coming back. And we really started to hit our stride with the show, you know, by the 13th episode and to take a break in the middle of that is like—it was a bit of a monkey wrench.

You've had some fierce competition, up against American Idol and now Lost. Has that been frustrating?
Yes. But now, we’re going back to Tuesday night at 9. We're going to air two more episodes on Thursdays at 9, and then we’re going back to Tuesday night at 9 [on April 22], which is good, but then we’re back against American Idol again during the finales. But we have been reassured that our ratings for the rest of the year are not going to be a determining factor in whether we come back or not. They just want to see if they like the way we’re finishing up the season and what we’re doing.

That's good to hear.
Yes. I mean, I'm sure the ratings count, they always do, but our fate is not totally hinging on whether or not we get the numbers. They are going to understand if we don’t do well against the final American Idol episodes. You know, One Tree Hill is in that time slot right now and they are getting killed. They know that nobody can really compete there.

So what's next for Sock?
Well, last week I got kicked out of the house, and this week you find out that me and the boys, we get ourselves some fancy new digs, and we have some new neighbors. I don’t want to tell you too much, but there’s something pretty f--king off about our neighbors that we have to deal with. But it's pretty awesome. We have our little bachelor reaper lair.

Is Sock gonna get some loving? I think it's about time.
You might see a little rekindling between me and Josie. And what you’ll find out in this episode is that Josie likes to “date down.” That’s the reason they’re together. Because I know on blogs or message boards, people are always like, “Why would she ever date that guy? Why would she ever go out with that guy?” [Laughs.] Yeah, people are not nice to me on the Internet! But I'm a professional. I can take it.

I hope he seriously doesn't think Reaper is better than Chuck.

I was reading the talkbackers from this story and I was a little mystified. They were all dissing Chuck.

Chuck is simply the better show, IMO. I want Reaper to succeed, get better. Maybe all these new complications with the guys moving in together and their gay neighbors will help.

I should probably catch up with Reaper, I stopped after episode five because there's just too many better shows on. The show is far too formulaic and the humor is way too broad...this would be MUCH better as a darker comedy. The slapstick gets old.

Chuck has better developed characters and storylines and even though it can sometimes be predictable when it comes to the spy stuff, the character stuff more than makes up for it.

I think Reaper's main problem is that they don't have enough to fill 40 minutes each episode so it always is dragged out.

If The CW renews it though, they REALLY need to hire new producers and revamp the entire thing. The potential is there...it's just not being used.

Reaper does nothing to establish a mood or distinct feel—with music for instance. Does it even use musical cues, scoring? Forgettable, if so.

Chuck actually uses pop songs pretty well. That's rare.

I think it's plain ol' stupid to even try to compare the two shows. One is about spys the other is about a guy who is the devils bounty hunter for escaped souls. Where's the similarities?!? Someone is stirring the s**t stew trying to drum up some tv #'s for Reaper. Let's be realistic here it's up against Lost then American Idol. If the CW suits had any brains they would renew for a second season and move it to Friday where the wrestling used to be to see if it will catch an audience. I'm sure the pre-teens who are stuck at home will make mom turn off Ghost Whisperer in favour of Reaper.

Everyone has been comparing Chuck and Reaper ever since last May because the two shows are basically the same genre and are aimed at the same viewers. They're both considered "geek chic" and I can see why critics have been comparing them, I think they're quite similar despite being so different.

Friday? On the CW? Are you serious?

I also don't think I'd ever pick Reaper over Ghost Whisperer either...

Yeah, they're both basically nerdy "genre" screwball dramedies, whatever you'd want to call them...

Poor schlubs working in dead end jobs with geek/smartass/loser friends, thrust into outlandish "superhero" roles against their will. Plus angsty romantic problems.

Tuesdays was Buffy/Angel night. It should work for Reaper, in theory. But the TV landscape is pretty brutal now.

If The CW cancels "Reaper", their Smallville/Supernatural lineup will be the only genre shows they have. They don't really have anything in development except a few soaps, reality shows, some medical drama...

It would be really nice if they would develop a few shows in the vein of "Buffy" and "Angel", but I don't think that's a priority for them. Even if Joss offered them a show I don't know if they'd take it...they're really going down the UPN road of being shitty.

So if the genre of these two shows is "geek chic" why isn't Eli Stone also included in the Reaper vs Chuck debate?
Eli is a smart person, like Chuck, comes across as a nerd, like Chuck and Sam, has visions that are implied to be from God where Sam is in direct contact with the Devil and Eli is saving people's lives in his own quirky, nerdy way, just like Chuck and Sam. Plus (if I can presume) the tv #'s are most likely similar to Reaper.
Pry why wouldn't Friday be a good night for Reaper? CW is loosing wrestling next season and need to fill the slot. I thought that there is no "big" blockbuster show on that night and that Reaper could possibly develop a following. Just like the X-Files did when it aired on FOX Friday in the 90's.

Eli Stone has a completely different tone from Chuck and Reaper, whereas I think those two are more similar. Also, Eli Stone is more whimsy-ish and could be compared to Pushing Daisies before it could be to Reaper and Chuck.

You're forgetting that on Fridays, The X-Files was originally one of the lowest rated shows on television. And it started out there, getting word of mouth, and I don't think you could say it was ever a success there, and it wouldn't have lasted nine years if FOX hadn't moved it to Sundays. Reaper didn't start on a Friday and its viewership has declined some, on Fridays it would most likely decline even more.

The WB never was able to have a successful hour-long show on Fridays, they accidentally killed Popular when that show was - um - popular, by moving it to Fridays starting with year two. The viewers just didn't follow it.

I'm sure The CW will try to put something on Fridays (if they move Supernatural there I will have a nervous breakdown), and if their pilots (90210; How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls) get picked up they probably WILL move Reaper there along with some reality show, but I wouldn't count on it to make it to that third season...

Almost every show on Fridays that does well in overall viewership usually doesn't do too fantastic in the demos...and Reaper's audience is probably playing video games and getting high on Friday nights.

I read in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly that the six post-strike episodes include lots of serialized mythology. Gotta say, the blurb spiked my interest some. I'll probably start over with the pilot this summer IF what I read about the new episodes leads me to believe that the show gets better.
