Smallville Creators Exit "After Much Heartache"; New Bosses Named

Color us super-shocked. Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have announced their exit from the series, effective at the end of this season.

Marveling at "seven amazing years," the exec producers "look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us," they say in an open letter. "After much heartache and debate, we have decided it is time for us to move on."

Giving props to the CW series' "remarkable" production team and "a wonderful cast who we have watched mature with admiration and affection," the duo say, "We have been rewarded with a fan base that is as loyal as it is vocal. We are incredibly proud of our work on this show. We achieved what we set out to do. We never compromised our vision. We leave knowing that Smallville is the longest-running comic-book-based series of all time [and] was featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, MAD Magazine, TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. The pilot had the highest-rated premiere in the history of the WB [where it originated]. Even in its seventh year, it is still the No. 1 scripted show on the network."

In a joint statement, the CW and Warner Bros. TV say, "Al Gough and Miles Millar have been great partners and instrumental in the development and success of Smallville. While we are sad to see them go, we are very excited to announce that executive producers Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson will helm the show next season. [They] have been writing for the show for the past six seasons, and as producers for the last four years, they have played an integral role in the ongoing creative evolution of the series. As showrunners, they will continue to deliver the compelling storytelling that Smallville fans have come to expect and love."

What brought on Goughlar's abrupt exodus? Their letter offers no details, although one section singles out some peers, saying of one, "When the knives were out, you always had our backs." In closing, the pair say, "To the fans who have stuck with us through the highs and the lows, know this — we never stopped fighting to make this show great."

Take this one with a grain of salt I guess...

In a stunning move today, Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have announced they are not returning for the recently ordered 8th season. In an open letter, they simply state they felt "..it was time to move on.".

Inside sources have been telling me for over a year that tensions between the cast and Al Gough have been high with some claiming Tom Welling had threatened to quit on more than one occasion over his character portrayal. Just moments ago, I had the chance to speak with one of my WB insiders who claims that after several months of talks, execs gave Gough the option to leave on his own terms or be replaced. Apparently, Millar simply followed his leader out the door.

Other sources are speculating this was an abrupt decision by WB after the recent court verdict regarding Superman's copyright and with the pending move of Justice League to Canada, they still have the desire for Tom Welling to suit up. This is of course what I'm hoping for too. Currently, there are no cast members for the blockbuster under contract and production crew members are leaving the project at an almost daily pace (production artist Daniel Cox and scenic artist Billy Shannon being the latest.) The film is still scheduled for a July shoot, but an announcement should be coming in about 2 weeks as to it officially moving JL out of Australia.

Maybe the show will actually...you know, become good now? It's usually the very definition of mediocrity.

I've never been a regular watcher, but it seems like this show is two or three seasons past its prime.

But yeah, maybe the last season will have a different vibe.

If its ratings stay the same The CW would try to keep this on until it's tenth season, probably.

I bought the first five seasons on DVD, I was sort of into it for a while and just wanted a sci-fi show to watch. I do like season one despite its flaws, seasons 2-3 have good moments. Season 4, IMO, is by far the best of the show. I haven't finished season 5 yet, and I bought it the day it came out...I think I only finished one disc.

I'll try to catch a couple of episodes next season, if I like what I see I guess I'll catch myself up.

Dang, this show's gonna be a shadow of its former self.

Exclusive: Smallville's Big Chloe Problem

It looks like Smallville's about to take another, potentially lethal, hit.

Just a week after it was announced that Michael Rosenbaum would not be returning full time as Lex next season, sources confirm to me exclusively that Allison Mack, arguably Smallville's most popular heroine, may be the next to go.

This marks quite a turnaround from a few months ago, when I deemed Mack a lock to come back next season. And I wasn't the only one. Although a deal wasn't signed at the time, Smallville insiders tell me that all indications were that the actress was on board for Season 8.

But then Rosenbaum terndered his resignation and everything fell apart.

"Allison's camp used Michael leaving as leverage in the negotiations with [Warner Bros.]," says one Smallville source, who adds that Kristin Kreuk's decision to only return for a handful of episodes as Lana only strengthened Mack's bargaining position. "They need Chloe now more than ever — and Allison's people know it." (Mack's reps declined to comment for this story.)

But will the studio suits budge? In this climate, with ratings down by double digits and belt-tightening going on everywhere, no one is optimistic. However, everyone pretty much agrees about one thing: Smallville can't afford to lose Mack right now. "If Allison leaves, they've essentially got Lois and Clark left," notes one insider. "And that show's been done before."

So, what do you think? Should Warner Bros. man up and give Mack what she's probably been worth all along? Or are you OK with Smallville turning into Lois & Clark: The Early Years?

I got bored of this show years ago BUT the only reason I watched the 5 season was Chloe, Lex, Martha, Lionel and Johnathan. That year was the one we lost Johnathan and Lex got monotonous. Lionel wasn't his great self and Martha, I could feel she was moving away.

After that season, I just wasn't interested any more.

Lois just doesn't do anything other than physically turn me on, and honestly I can watch better shows with hotter ladies(yes, there are some).

I just don't get why they turned Smallville into Charmed by making it go on far too long and now they are losing the best characters?

Puh.
