This guy is serious about his Doctor Who.
New 'Doctor Who' Boss Turns Down Spielberg
In the real world, if a phone rings and Steven Spielberg is on the other end offering you a job ... there is no question. You take it.
But the legendary director and producer was turned down recently ... by new "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat.
According to The Daily Mail, Moffat was offered as much as $2 million to write the screenplays for Spielberg's upcoming trilogy project Tintin, based on the popular European comic book series. It would've been far more than the reported £150,000, or $300,000 Moffat is expected to make -- each year -- for working on "Doctor Who."
"I know a lot of people won't understand it, but I've been dreaming about writing for 'Doctor Who' since I was 7," Moffat said. "There are no bad feelings between Spielberg and me, but 'Doctor Who' has to come before Hollywood. The show has enjoyed a renaissance. I am working on scripts to be filmed next year. The show is all consuming."
Moffat originally had agreed to work on the films with Spielberg, however. He told the newspaper that he had actually finished the first film, and was contractually obligated to write the second film. However, when the writer's strike happened, he wasn't able to work on the project. By the time the strike ended, he had been offered the "Doctor Who" job, and there was no turning back.
"I hope you won't make what happened sound too dramatic," Moffat said. "I talked to Steven and he understood completely. I could not work on the second Tintin film and work on 'Doctor Who.' So I chose 'Doctor Who.'"
