The Doctor's New Assistant May Be Bionic

Ignore any idea of popster Lily Allen being the eleventh Doctor's companion. There's a new name being bandied about to join the cast of Doctor Who... and it's a little more believable: Michelle Ryan.

Ryan may be best known to Americans as the lead in the failed Bionic Woman reboot from 2007, but prior to that, she had appeared in British drama Jekyll — written and exec-produced by new Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat. According to British tabloid, the Sunday Mirror, an anonymous source involved in Who production said,

Michelle's been in secret talks with BBC bosses. They are likely to announce her as Doctor Who's new assistant very soon. She is perfect for the role. She is goodlooking and the right age to star alongside Matt. Everyone agrees they look great together and reckon fans will think they're the perfect team too.

If true, the decision would make sense — through Bionic Woman and current BBC series Merlin, Ryan has become comfortable with genre television fans, and a high-profile role on Who may give her career a boost in the same way that it did Billie Piper's.

I'm easily on board with that one. The kid Doctor Who though still has me skeptical, and I don't see the chemistry yet.

It's OK though, I was wrong the last time. I was skeptical about Tennant too (just saw him as a pretty-boy), and was cheerfully proven wrong.

C'mon 2010, get here already.

She's dressed all action star. Tennant and Ryan, good combo.

I didn't like the guy's crack about a horrid performance as the Bionic Woman. Hey, I liked that show. I thought she did real good as an American.

I thought her American accent was pretty impressive actually. Her character was written blandly I think. Wish they could've somehow worked out that show's problems and kept Sackhoff on as a regular. That would have been "must see TV".

Oh yeah, they missed the boat there, by not realizing what they had with the Sackhoff character. She could have carried that show.

They were supposed to have a second season where Jordan Bridges' character was made a regular, but then the writer's strike and they didn't...

BUT I love Michelle Ryan still and think she would be an awesome companion. And would save the show for me I think because this new Doctor I can't really get behind...

It's looking like she has been cast for the next special along with comedian/actor Lee Evans...so I won't hold my breath on her being the next full-time companion...I think she might be good though.
