This will probably seem like a stupid question but when a reputation quote is posted in response to a message is it polite to reply to it to say thanks?

IMO, yes, it is. But then my mother was a stickler for that sort of thing. :)
Maybe I'm just old fashioned though. Anybody else care to comment?

I don't think it's necessary. I don't expect anything when I give karma, which, I have to say, is often. (I tend to give some whenever I really like the post or agree with it.) Some people might like a thank you or something, I suppose, but there's nothing in the FAQ about it. :)

I personally don't think you should. Karma was introduced so that people who only had very little to say to a post, could leave a small comment behind instead of posting a one-line reply. If you now start posting one-line thanks-posts where's the use? Of course, when you're posting a longer comment anyway, you might add a thanks... but like P17, I don't really expect it either. I'd rather you karma me back on another post ;)

It's up to you - I personally don't respond to karma unless I have something to say about it. :)

Thanks for this, everyone. I was thinking along the lines that it wasn't necessary to reply to reputation quotes but I just wanted to check. Everyone can take it that I'm always grateful to get them, agreeing with me or otherwise. Thanks again.

I've probably never responded to a karma in my life, unless it was relevant for the discussion in the thread.. I just never thought about it ;)
