Episode One: I Will Die For You
1743
It's a dark and cold night and the towers of Medenham Hall, loom up over the lake. The lady of the house, Rachel McBain, rushes down the staircase out into the night. She enters a stone building in the grounds where the African slaves live. In the corner, a voodoo priest is performing a sacrificial ceremony. Suddenly Julius, one of the slaves, seizes Rachel and, oozing with sexuality, lifts her gown and presses his body into hers. Rachel doesn't resist this passionate encounter, which is clearly not the first. While Julius makes love to her, Rachel watches the voodoo priest transfixed as he slashes the throat of a cockerel.
2004
Roughly 250 years have passed and Medenham Hall has become a progressive boarding school for 6th form students. The majority are part of "The Crowd", however, there are two that are obviously not, roommate's, Cassie and Thelma . Whilst Thelma is less bothered by her exclusion, rejected for being a lesbian, Cassie would love to belong.
In particular she'd love to belong with one person - Troy. But after hearing gang leader Gemma explain her exclusive sex pact with him to her friends, Cassie realises it will never be anything more than a sorry case of unrequited love. Searching for a place to be alone to reflect on her thoughts, Cassie stumbles upon the outhouse - the former slavery quarters. Drawing on a cigarette, she leans against the wall and it moves. Intrigued, Cassie bends down to investigate what she has unravelled. She finds a secret hiding place, which contains a wooden cross, made of bone and bound with human hair. When she reaches again she pulls out a vase with spikes on the bottom. Cassies cuts herself, and a droplet of her blood falls into the vase.
Meanwhile, Thelma is keen to discuss her feelings for Cassie, but Cassie's thoughts are elsewhere. In her sleep she has visions of Rachel McBain and Jenny, a maid at Medenham. Cassie screams herself out of her sleep. But it's not just one nightmare: this is only the beginning of Cassie's strange feelings. Cassie discovers that Rachel had an obsession with voodoo, which sent her mad sacrificing one of her maids. On top of her strange feelings, Cassie is experiencing strange and frightening powers.
If that wasn't enough to contend with, Cassie has a crush to deal with. Thelma is not impressed that she's fallen for Troy, which throws their friendship into turbulence. Things are not made any better when Cassie is invited to a party that Troy will be at by his close friend Roxanne.
But Roxanne isn't all sweetness and light. She tricks Leon, Troy's friend, into making a pass at Cassie. He forces himself upon her, but she struggles to get away. As she does the lights shatter sending sparks over the struggling pair. Cassie runs out of the nightclub and back to Medenham.
As she is running up the steps an icy cold hand stops her and grabs her wrist. She turns to see the face of Rachel McBain. Rachel pulls her closer and harshly whispers the name "Azazeal" into Cassie's ear. Utterly terrified Cassie runs into her room into the arms of a shocked Thelma. She breaks down and tells Thelma all about what has been going on with her visions and powers.
The next day in art they are all working on their respective projects when Leon sits down opposite her. She ignores him. There is a metal mobile hanging above his head. He makes various snide remarks about her frigid exterior. Suddenly the mobile above his head bursts into flames and crashes down onto the unsuspecting Leon. Thelma looks at Cassie as if to say 'Did you do that?' And all the time there is a dark brooding figure in the background, watching Cassie. There is an investigation by headmaster David Tyrel as to what happened in the art room. During her discussion with him, Cassie discovers who Azazeal was. It's more chilling than she expected. He is the leader of the Nephelim, the fallen ones. Creatures that feed on the souls of men.
At a party Thelma sees Cassie use her powers for the first time when Leon is tripped by am electric cable that wraps itself around his legs sending him tumbling and throwing his drink over Troy. A miffed Troy charges off to the bathroom and Cassie follows. She tries to makes small talk with him but Troy is in too bad mood to care or talk. Thelma is instantly jealous and rushes out of the party. Cassie goes after her and they have an emotional row. Thelma tries to force Cassie to admit that there is a sexual connection between them and to acknowledge that she has feelings for her, but Cassie is confused and doesn't know what she really feels. Thelma walks off, the pain evident. And then there in the doorway is Azazeal, he catches Cassie's eye and then disappears.
The next morning Cassie is awoken by David Tyrel and an army of policemen. They are looking for a missing Thelma. Cassie doesn't know where she is and is worried. The helicopters fly overhead as everyone holds their breath fearing the worst.
Azazeal appears to Cassie twice that day: first in the graveyard over Rachel McBain's headstone and later in the school. He draws her into the library, she follows desperate to know what has happened to Thelma but also unable to resist his attractive power. 'Where's Thelma?' she demands. He says he'll show her if she makes a "willing sacrifice". She follows him through the school and down into a secret passage behind Rachel's portrait. Thelma is at the bottom, gagged. He is losing his power on earth and needs a willing sacrifice, either Cassie or Thelma. Cassie puts herself forward desperate to save her friends life. Azazeal raises the knife but Thelma runs at him and in doing so sacrifices herself as he turns and stabs her. Thelma dies in Cassie's arms.
Suddenly, Cassie sits upright in bed. Has it all been a dream? She goes to the window and sees Thelma's body being pulled out of the lake. The whole school gathers for the funeral. Immersed in grief, Cassie hears a familiar voice. She turns around to see Thelma, who is thoroughly enjoying her own funeral. It's clear things will never be the same again. And up on the battlements of the school looms Azazeal. Cassie must face her destiny.
Episode Two: Life Goes On
Life still goes on at Medenham hall after Thelma's death. It's Saturday night and the students are at a nightclub. Cassie seems to have returned to the position of outsider, with everyone gossiping behind their hands. As she buys a drink from the bar she meets a guy called Brendan. He's obviously quite taken with her and they gently flirt with each other, but Cassie is being watched, Azazeal is never very far away.
Later in the evening while being chatted up by the school geek, Cassie's blood runs cold when she sees Azazeal standing in a doorway off the dance floor. Cassie follows into the Nightclub corridor and finds Brendan slumped as if he has just had a fit. Both suddenly embarrassed by the situation, they separate. As the evening reaches its peak however, Cassie watches Brendan take a girl out into the kitchen area and sees his eyes…they are veined with blood just like the Nephalim. She follows them out and finds Brendan pinning the girl against the wall threatening her with a broken bottle. Cassie uses her powers to spring the fire extinguisher free releasing the CO2 into his face. He makes chase and she makes the cookers shoot flames, eventually using her mind she frees a live electric cable and fries him on the fire escape! Not your usual Saturday night out…
The next day Cassie is despairing that her life will never return to normal. Thelma, comforts her. She's enjoying her new ghostly life: she can't get fat and she gets to nose in on people's dreams. But she still worries about Cassie and still can't help her feelings for her. Thelma's jealousy grows when Troy gives Cassie a lift and they end up having a flirty coffee. Cassie sees her spying on them and is furious.
In the evening Cassie is confronting Thelma about her spying when they catch sight of a little girl - Esther, Cassie bends down to talk to Ester. Ester lifts her hands, they are covered in blood and the nails are broken. Suddenly her angelic look turns to hatred as she seizes Cassie around the throat. Thelma is helpless but Cassie manages to prise her off and they run to an adjoining room and slam the door shut. The little girl tries clawing her way in like a trapped animal, then it's over.
Episode Three: Deeper Into The Darkness
Worried by Thelma's discovery, Cassie heads off to talk to her mother. Lilleth is a patient at a women's' mental institution and whilst initially coherent when Cassie starts to enquire about Azazeal, she soon starts to become upset and confused. Lilleth tells Cassie that Azazeal made her send Cassie to Medenham, that he got into her mind, tormented her until she agreed. She tells Cassie that she is descended from the Medenham witches and that she cannot escape Azazeal or her destiny. It's all too much for Cassie; she leaves the hospital, her head spinning.
Cassie has recurring dreams of Esther swinging from a rope and Thelma voices her concern that what happened to Esther could happen to Cassie. However when David, the Headmaster tells Cassie that the villagers lynched Ester, Cassie and Thelma sigh with relief since nowadays mob lynchings are pretty well unknown of. Cassie feels strong again.
The undeniable attraction between Cassie and Troy continues and a second date is arranged. This time Cassie clears it with Thelma and makes her see that this relationship with Troy, although in its early days, means a lot to her. Thelma gives Cassie her grudging blessing.
The night before their date Azazeal slips into Troy's room. Azazeal cuts his finger, a single drop of blood falls onto the wooden floor. Then he takes a giant grub from his pocket and lets feed on his blood. Azazeal approaches Troy's bed, and slips the creature into Troy's ear. The insect buries itself into Troy and Azazeal watches as the cockroach moves under his skin.
Lilleth calls the school wanting to see her daughter; although Cassie is reluctant she can't ignore her own mother so she leaves for the hospital. Lilleth gives Cassie a necklace with a pendant called the Jewel of Herath: 'It will protect you' she says. However when Cassie has left, Azazeal comes to Lilleth and it becomes apparent the jewel simply makes Cassie blind to the possessed and therefore in greater danger.
When Leon hears about Troy's date with Cassie he can't stop himself from making snide comments. Normally Troy would ignore his mate's gibes but something has got hold of him and when Leon pushes it a little too far, Troy reacts by slamming Leon against the wall and thumping him. The whole gang of friends is taken aback by Troy's behaviour; it's so out of character. Thelma is around the corner listening and can't resist a peek, when she does she is shocked to see Troy's eyes criss-crossed with veins of blood, he is possessed.
When Thelma tries to warn her about Troy, Cassie is puts it down to Thelma's jealousy and over-active imagination. Although persistent Thelma doesn't succeed in stopping her, but does convince her to wear the pendant. However, when Cassie has left Thelma sees a picture that tells her the pendant is no protection whatsoever. She waits for Cassie, desperate to warn her of the danger.
Tory and Cassie continue to really hit it off, she cannot see the blood in his eyes and has no idea of the danger. On their return Troy persuades Cassie to join him in the barn. Thelma, having seen the car, searches franticly for Cassie. The young lovers start to make out. When Thelma finds them they have finished making love and Cassie's eyes are crisscrossed with veins of blood. Thelma was too late. Cassie is possessed.
Episode Four: Possession
There is no doubt that Cassie has changed. She wears sexy tighter clothes; she is hostile with Thelma and exudes attitude. She barely takes notice of young Troy but it only makes him even more desperate to be with her and repeat their wonderful night of lovemaking. His friends can't understand why he is allowing himself to be treated this way but he can't resist her.
It's night and Cassie is in a strange bar; dark, fetishistic and very seedy. She is there to meet Azazeal. No longer afraid of him in her possessed state she teases him sexually. She is going to make him wait, but Azazeal is unconcerned he has had a lot of practice with women and he knows he will have her. When Cassie returns she is uninterested in Thelma's concern and even less so in Troy's jealousy and when David tries to gently tackle her she brushes him off.
Cassie's behaviour continues to shock people. During a game of truth or dare she comes on to Leon, much to everyone's surprise and Troy's dismay. Later on she entices Leon in to the bathrooms, pins him against the wall and starts to have sex. Quick thinking Thelma manages to stop the situation with a douse of cold water. Leon struggles to get away: 'Jesus Christ. You're a nutter', he shouts back at Cassie.
Later on, when Thelma is raiding a vending machine she sees Peggy, a woman dressed in 1920's pyjamas. To Thelma's surprise Peggy turns around and talks to her: 'You can see me'. Peggy's father owned Medenham Hall and she died in 1923 of flu. The two make an immediate connection, and its clear that Peggy is also a lesbian. Peggy explains that she is an Egyptologist and is investigating Herath the daughter of a pharaoh. Peggy explains that she is stuck though, because in the inscription is someone called Azazeal…
Leon tries to tell Troy about how weird Cassie was with him. When Troy tackles Cassie she is unbothered and agrees they should split up. Troy can't help thinking where did it all go wrong? Thelma decides she has to take action to snap Cassie out of the possession. She fixes a plug, which Cassie uses, but the school fuses blow and Cassie is protected. When Thelma checks her eyes they are still blood filled and demon like.
Everybody leaves for Christmas, only Jo, the English teacher, Cassie a couple of other students remain and of course Thelma. Azazeal comes to Cassie in the night; slowly he is breaking down her resistance. Thelma tries to remind Cassie that he killed her, but Cassie is obviously under his power and falling for him.
Azazeal and Cassie meet again and she gives up all resistance. They return to Cassie's room and have passionate sex. Azazeal leaves early in the morning and meets Jo for the first time.
Meanwhile Peggy and Thelma have discovered more about Azazeal's past. He fell in love with Herath but the Egyptians believed that their union destroyed the natural order, allowing the dead to walk with the living as Thelma and Peggy do now. Herath was buried alive and she was carrying Azazeal's child!
Thelma connects an electrical circuit to Cassie's locker in a final attempt to rid her of her possession. It works and Cassie is released. However a nighttime visit from Azazeal proves the situation is very much to contrary, he isn't going to let her go.
Episode Five: The Release
Thelma finds Cassie throwing up in the bathrooms. Cassie brushes it off as food poisoning but when it happens again the next morning Thelma makes Cassie take a pregnancy test. It's positive. Cassie and Troy used protection. The child is Azazeal's. Jo comes in and Cassie is forced to tell her that she is pregnant. Jo books her a doctor's appointment.
The next morning Azazeal wakes her up. He knows she is pregnant and is clearly thrilled that he is to be father and that his destiny is to be fulfilled. He tells Cassie that he knows she is planning to abort the child but he warns her that he will not be cut out of the situation.
As Cassie leaves for her hospital appointment, a familiar car pulls into the driveway: it's Troy. All he has been thinking about is Cassie, trying to understand where it went wrong. Having returned to her old self she feels for him and the attraction is definitely still there but she knows it can't be. As she turns towards the car, Troy sees Cassie's belly and guesses she is pregnant. He tries to stop her going to the hospital, and says he wants to be part of the child's future but she refuses and drives away.
Cassie only conceived the child a few days ago but the doctor tells her that the baby is 20 weeks old; it's growing at an accelerated speed. Sensing danger, Cassie wants a termination as soon as possible so they book her in
Back at Medenham, Azazeal has kept himself busy seducing the English teacher Jo whilst Thelma and Peggy have continued their investigations. Peggy has discovered a prayer in hieroglyphics for deliverance of the Netjer: Egyptian demons that possess souls. It states that if Herath's child was ever to be born the birth would release two hundred demons. Thelma makes the connection between the Netjar and the Nephalim, could they be one in the same? If so, by giving birth Cassie will release the demons. Yet if the child is killed, the demons will still be trapped and natural order will be restored. This leaves one predicament: if the natural order is restored, Cassie and Thelma will no longer be able to see each other.
Cassie is frightened about the operation and asks Thelma to stay with her little knowing the consequences of the abortion on their friendship. Thelma hides her devastation and promises not to leave her. A little later Cassie runs into Jo and her new boyfriend. She is horrified to see it is Azazeal and even more shocked at how jealous she is, just what he intended.
At the hospital Dr Surtees cannot understand how fast the baby is growing. He brings Cassie's appointment forward. In hospital Azazeal visits Cassie again. She cannot deny how much she still wants him. She forces herself to tell him to leave her alone. Cassie tells Thelma that she doesn't think she can go through with it. Thelma breaks the news that the only reason Azazeal wants her baby is not to be with her but to release all the Nephalim.
Azazeal joins Dr Sutees in a bible reading class- he starts to play on the doctor's religious beliefs.
Cassie knows she has to go through with it. The two friends make their final farewells.
After the operation, Cassie wakes up and calls for Thelma and is confused when she sees Thelma at the door and the baby has gone, so why can Cassie still see her? In another hospital room, Azazeal is standing with Dr Surtees staring at a baby boy, born at five months. Azazeal has his son and the demons are released…

Episode Six: Cursed
In Victorian England, a girl who looks strangely like Cassie holds a stunned crowd silent as she suspends a vase in the air with the power of her mind alone. Azazeal is among the watchers and later he pays the showman money to sleep with the girl. As he leaves her a hooded figure steps from the shadows. This is Ella. She silently enters the girl's room and slits her throat with a practiced motion. She leaves the girl dead.
Back in the present Cassie wakes up in a cold sweat. Thelma's concerned – Cassie hasn't been sleeping. When Cassie spies a nephelim, she and Thelma know it can only mean one thing. Cassie and Azazeal's baby is alive.
Cassie tries to question Dr Surtees, the Doctor who was supposed to have aborted her child. He fobs her off. Cassie and Thelma return to the hospital that night to demand the truth from Dr Surtees. But when they get there, they get a nasty surprise. Dr Surtees body falls down from the ceiling. His throat has been split. Unbeknownst to Cassie, Ella stalks out, her latest job accomplished.
Back at school, school geek Felix gives Cassie some advice on dealing with the death of a loved one. He's sweet and Cassie appreciates his kindness.
Thelma meanwhile is on a secret mission to the morgue. She needs new clothes and they have to belong to a dead person. Searching through the mortuary drawers she finds just he outfit she needs.
However her elation is short-lived as that evening she spies Jo Watkins leaving the school in a hurry. Thelma gets into Jo's car with her and sees her pick up a package and take it to a derelict church. Following Jo inside, Thelma is shocked to discover that Azazeals is inside, with a toddler who can only be Cassie's baby. And the baby can see her. Thelma runs away, chased by Azazeal
Meanwhile Cassie has another encounter with Felix. Fearing a Nephelim has gone after him, Cassie follows Felix into the men's bathroom where she encounters Felix naked... and he thinks it was intentional!
When Cassie discovers where Azazeal and her child, Malachi, are, she goes to the church to confront her former lover. Cassie is furious and tells Azazeal she wants nothing to do with him, but it's clear to him that she is not unaffected by seeing her child.
As Thelma and Cassie return to Medenham to discuss their next step, they don't notice the arrival of a new girl. Ella.
As the school eats dinner, Thelma comments on the new girl and is stunned when Ella turns round and winks at her. Ella's clearly supernatural in some way. As Cassie prepares for a party that evening the girls consider the idea that Ella might be a female Nephelim. Whatever the case, they decide to be careful.
All the gang are at the party, getting drunk on tequila. Cassie runs into Felix again and he finally declares his love for her. Cassie is taken aback and Felix instantly sees she doesn't feel the same way. He runs off. When Cassie follows her pushes her away. She falls. Suddenly the Nephelim, Baraquel, attacks, killing Felix instantly. The Nephelim is advancing on Cassie when Ella appears. She uses her telekinetic powers to kill Baraquel, leaving Cassie shaken but unharmed. She is devastated when she sees Felix lying dead.
Ella tells Thelma and Cassie that Baraquel would never have hurt her, he was looking after her for Azazeal, his master. She reveals that she's been fighting Azazeal for five hundred years.
As Felix's grieving parents arrive at the school Ella tells Cassie that Felix's death was caused by her baby still being alive, opening the gates of chaos. Cassie asks her how she can stop the Nephelim. Ella tells her they will have to kill the child.
Episode Seven: Death Takes the Mother
Cassie, Ella and Thelma secretly watch Jo playing with baby Malachi as Azazeal looks on. Ella tells Cassie that she has to return to Azazeal and gain his trust so she can steal the baby. She then has to bring Malachi back to Medenham so Ella can kill him, sealing the gates of chaos. Cassie tries to stay resolved but it's clear she has feelings for her child. This will not be an easy task for any of them.
As Ella's lawyer arrives with a mysterious box, Thelma tries to talk Cassie out of keeping her end of the bargain. But Cassie seems determined.
As Cassie goes off to the church, Ella prepares for the ritual with Thelma looking on. Ella's deed box contains many strange and magical things, including a weapon called a Volta, which fires bolts of electricity. Ella demonstrates how her ritual knife can cleave the body and soul of any mortal. Thelma's rapidly starting to realise that Ella's not to be messed with. However when Thelma asks her why she was to late to prevent Malachi being born, it's clear that Ella does have one weakness. She claims she was bewitched by a demon – in the guise of a beautiful boy.
When Cassie arrives at the derelict church, Malachi is crying. When she comforts him and returns the amber stone he was playing with, the child falls quiet. Azazeal tells Cassie that she and the child have a bond.
Meanwhile there's a new teacher in town, and Roxanne has her sights set on him. It looks like she may have met her match this time however – when Thelma and Ella go to the church to steal holy water, they discover that Jez is a priest.
Azazeal tells Cassie that he wants the two of them and the baby to be a family. Cassie pretends not to be interested, but is she falling for him all over again? As Azazeal persists Cassie's resolve seems to ebb away and they kiss as Malachi plays on the floor…
Back at Medenham, Roxanne steps up her campaign to get her claws into Jez by telling him she needs counselling about Felix's death. Jez doesn't seem to be falling for it. However Roxanne is not to be defeated, particularly when she discovers from Ella that Jez is a priest. When Roxanne nexts sees Jez she runs from the room in tears. Alex tells him it's his fault and Jez gives in. He will counsel her.
Using the holy water from the church, Ella draws a Hexagram to protect Cassie when she recues the baby from Azazeal. Thelma looks on, sceptical. As they talk, Cassie seems to have forgotten all about the plan as she enjoys an afternoon of passion with Azazeal. It looks like all Ella's preparations may come to nothing.
However as Ella and Thelma patiently wait, Azazeal lies asleep in the derelict church. Quietly Cassie takes the baby and the amber stone and leaves. As she runs through the empty streets, Azazeal awakes and realises he has been betrayed.
Cassie arrives back at Medenham, much to Thelma and Ella's relief. But unbeknownst to them, Azazeal is not far behind her.
As Ella prepares the church for the ritual, Roxanne is attempting to seduce Jez with tales of her sexual exploit. It looks like she's got him right where she wants him…
Meanwhile Ella returns from the church to find Thelma and Cassie have fallen asleep in the Hexagram and Malachi has wandered off. Thelma and Ella go to look for him, discovering instead the dead body of George the Porter. Azazeal is walking round the school searching for his son. Cassie sees Malachi wandering around and runs after him, leaving the safety of the Hexagram. Azazeal sees her and gives chase but Cassie tricks him in to walking into the Hexagram himself. He is now trapped by the power of the symbol and the holy water which surrounds it.
The girls rush to the Church as Azazeal summons all his strength to break out of the Hexagram. As Ella lays the baby on the table and prepares to kill him, Azazeal enters the church. He beseeches Cassie not to let Ella do this. Cassie tries to remain strong. As Ella makes to bring the knife down on Malachi, Cassie leaps in the way. The knife strikes a fatal blow.
Cassie lies dying as Thelma tells her she loves her, before disappearing into the air. Azazeal takes the baby as Thelma and Ella stand shocked.
Episode Eight: Spiral
The police tell David that they're going to give up searching for Cassie's body. Headmaster David Tyrel informs the gathered students, who take the news rather less seriously than Thelma would like. When Ella joins in with their joking around, Thelma storms off in a huff.
Ella goes after her. Thelma's still clearly upset about Cassie's death. Ella tells her they have to work together to find Malachi. Thelma wants no part of it but then a predator-like shape appears in the sky and the trees around it burst in to flame. Ella stands transfixed and Thelma has to drag her to safety.
Ella explains that the Seraph must have slipped through the gates of chaos opened by Malachi's birth and subsequent survival. They eat souls, but only pure souls, belonging to virgins. She must kill this one before it do any harm.
Ella elects to use a virgin as bait, and picks Leon as the best candidate from amongst the students. During a Judo lesson she pins him to the floor and asks him out.
As Leon frets about what to wear on the date, and Roxanne takes the piss, Ella explains to Thelma why she's choosing to attack the Seraph rather than go after Azazeal. She reveals that she still has the amber Stone of Belial from Episode Two. It's a weapon which Malachi needs to fulfil his destiny and Azazeal will want it back. She hides it in the fireplace of her room before venturing out on her date.
As Leon and Ella chat in a swanky cocktail bar, Thelma watches in tears as Jo Watkins and David Tyrel pack Cassie’s things away. When they have gone she sits in Cassie’s empty room, with her heart breaking. Suddenly Azazeal appears. He tells her Cassie is stuck between worlds. She needs to see Thelma one more time before she will be at piece. Thelma wants nothing more than one more chance to see Cassie but Azazeal tells her there is a price to pay. She must bring him the Stone of Belial.
Azazeal watches as Ella returns from her date with Leon. She tells Leon she had a good time and would like to do it again. Azazeal smiles...
When Thelma asks Ella why she hasn't lured the Seraph with Leon yet, Ella says it's because Leon isn't ready yet, but is she perhaps growing fond of him? Meanwhile Roxanne goes for another "counselling session" with Jez, and manages to leave her pen behind at his house.
Ella asks Leon on another date. Thelma sees them laughing and joking together. While Ella and Leon play Jenga in the pub, Thelma extracts the Stone of Belial from the fireplace. And as they return home she heads outside.
As Thelma follows Azazeal into the woods, things become passionate between Ella and Leon. But Ella pulls away when she remembers that Leon must remain a virgin if he is to be used as bait against the Seraph. Leon is not happy and Ella feels guilty.
Meanwhile Thelma hands the stone to Azazeal and she sees Cassie again. Thelma tells her that she wants to die again to be with her. Cassie tells her that her place is now on earth, helping Ella. She gives her a kiss as her last gift.
As daylight dawns Azazeal pays a visit to Jo Watkins. As she lies terrified, he whispers in her ear. Whatever he says, it's clearly the most dreadful thing she's ever heard as she let's out a silent scream.
Ella sits by the lake with Thelma. She's having second thoughts as her feelings for Leon grow, but she knows she must do her duty.
As David Tyrel discovers a catatonic Jo Watkins in her room, Ella is sending a sexy webcam message to Leon, apologising for the night before. It succeeds but it's obviously a struggle for Ella to deceive him like this.
Ella's clearly tense about her date with Leon and Thelma's feeling guilty about betraying Ella by giving the stone away. Jez meanwhile is telling David Tyrel that he saw marks on Ella's wrists. He thinks she might be self-harming. David's obviously concerned.
That evening Ella takes Leon out into the woods, promising him a good time. Meanwhile Roxanne is also out in the woods, paying a visit to Jez. As Roxanne seduces Jez rather successfully, Ella ties Leon to a tree to wait for the Seraph. However, Thelma meanwhile has discovered that her last kiss from Cassie wasn't just an empty gift. She finds that when she looks in the mirror her breath forms condensation on it. The condensation spells a warning. The Seraph is not a Seraph at all but the Nephelim Araquiel, who is in disguise in an effort to kill Ella. Thelma grabs the Volta and rushes out.
As Roxanne leaves Jez's with a big smile on her face, Thelma races to the clearing where Leon is tied to a tree. Ella looks on unawares. The Nephelim Araquiel watches her. As he makes his attack, Thelma reaches the clearing. Shouting Ella a warning, she throws her the Volta. Just in time Ella sees her mistake and fires the Volta at Araquiel. After a struggle, he finally lies dead.
Thelma and Ella look relieved, until they see Roxanne stumble into the clearing and find Leon tied up. She takes a picture of him with her phone. He obviously thinks Ella has abandoned him there as a joke.
Meanwhile Jez enters his church, but he is not alone. Azazeal stands in the shadows. He informs Jez that Araquiel is dead. For a second, Jez reveals his true form, the Nephelim Ramiel. He tells Azazeal not to worry. Ella's trial is already beginning.
Episode Nine: Ella Burns
Ella is playing squash when suddenly she is gripped by terrible pain in her head. It's unbearable. In her agony, she telekinetically smashes the glass back wall of the court.
When Ella comes into class she looks a pale shadow of her former self. Jez is talking about witches and looks right at her as he does so. He says there was once a witch trial right there at Medenham...
Roxanne has texted everyone a photo of Leon tied to the tree in episode three. He's not speaking to Ella.
Thelma realises that there's something up with Ella and thinks it's connected to whatJez was saying about the witch. Ella's clearly in a foul mood and tells Thelma to leave her alone. Meanwhile David Tyrel has found the smashed wall in the squash court and that Ella was the last to use it.
Jez and Roxanne are now in a relationship and Jez asks her to spy on Ella for him. He claims he's worried about her...
When Ella drops her lunch tray in the canteen, clearly in agonising pain again, Roxanne follows her outside, where Thelma asks Ella if she's the Medenham witch. Ella tells her to she's a leech and a parasite. Thelma is upset. Roxanne has watched the entire exchange and to her it looks like Ella's been having a conversation with thin air.
Thelma heads to the Corn Exchange, where Jez said the witch was tried. She tags on to a tour party and hears how suspected witches were tortured and tried before being burnt at the stake. No wonder Ella's a bit uptight!
Jez and David discuss Ella's recent behaviour. David's worried, and asks Jez what they should do. Jez says he'll help and we flashback to Ella, in the past, being tortured by a Witchfinder – Azazeal.
Ella flashes back to the present. Azazeal. She rushes to the fireplace in her room. When she gets there she realises that the precious Stone of Belial is gone. Azazeal holds the stone as he talks to Jez. This time there will be no escape for Ella.
Jez attempts to get Ella to take some pills for her headache. She become suspicious when she later finds him in her room. She throws the pills he gave her away. She's now in agony and tells Thelma that she knows Azazeal has the stone – and he's killing her with it. Thelma feels terrible, she's desperate to help. She gives Ella painkillers, but they are pills which has Jez planted there...
Meanhile Roxanne tries to persuade Leon that he should spy on Ella too. Leon refuses. He obviously still has feelings for Ella.
Thelma sees Azazeal standing outside Ella's window. He heads off into the woods. She follows him, trying to get the stone back. But he leads her to Medenham Corn Exchange and traps her there, in the chair used to torture Ella back in 1666.
Meanwhile Ella has become delirious and wanders into Leon's room, where the gang are amazed by her apparent insanity. She is screaming and agitated. David is called. He takes her to the library where Jez is burning "soothing candles". Ella claims they're St John’s Wort, poison to her. She screams at Jez about his master, as Azazeal sits in the corner. David clearly thinks she's insane and goes to call a doctor, as he does, Azazeal tells Ella that he'll almost miss her.
We flashback to 1666 where Ella is being tortured. In the present Thelma feels it too, thanks to the Stone of Belial which Azazeal is using to give her a front row seat of Ella's suffering.
David calls a GP, who in turn calls a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist talks to Roxanne. Leon is also forced to incriminate Ella.
In 1666 Azazeal questions Leon and Roxanne at Ella’s witch trial and urges Ella to confess. She says she will not.
In the present, Ella tells Dr Wilkinson that Thelma is a ghost. Dr Wilkinson recommends that she should be sectioned, for her own good. She's clearly mentally ill.
In the past, Ella is sentenced to death by burning at the stake.
In the present Ella is dragged to an ambulance.
In the past Ella stirs as she smells flames lit around her.
Thelma has escaped from the torture chair in the present.
In the past, Thelma appears, and rescues Ella from the stake, to the shock of the watching court.
Thelma returns to the present. She rushes to Medenham. But as she gets there she sees the ambulance driving off with Ella. Jez tells her that she wasn't so lucky this time – it's clear that he can see her.
Ella lies in a hospital bed, dead to the world and so very vulnerable...
Episode Ten: With A Little Help From My Friends (Part 1)
Thelma enlists Leon's help as she looks to make amends with Ella.
Episode Eleven: With A Little Help From My Friends (Part 2)
As dawn breaks over the city, Azazeal waits in the derelict church for his son. When Malachi appears he is late and drunk and Azazeal is angry. Ella is still out there and Malachi is in danger. Malachi, who now appears about 17 years of age, doesn't take it seriously. He goes to bed. Nurse Perie, now out of her uniform, joins Azazeal. It's clear the two of them are lovers. She tells him Malachi will be an amazing man. Azazeal says he hopes so...
At Max's flat, Ella's not looking too good. Thelma watches him, worried. Ella tells Leon he's not allowed to tell anybody where they are. Thelma tries to persuade her to tell Leon the truth. Ella says he wouldn't believe her. Thelma argues that she has the means to show him, there's a vial of liquid in her box that allows mortals to see the spirit world. Ella refuses to draw him into her dangerous fight against Azazeal.
Meanwhile Leon's running out of cash fast. He makes a phone call to Tom. Unfortunately Tom's with Roxanne at the time. She's still spying on the students, as Jez tightens his grip on the school by sucking up to Sir Ralph, one of the governors.
Ella tries to get Leon to leave her, for his own good, but Leon refuses. It's clear he has strong feelings for her and won't abandon her in the condition she's in. Thelma overhears the conversation and makes a decision. She climbs out of the window.
Meanwhile Roxanne is questioning Tom, and when he admits he's spoken to Leon, she goes straight to Jez with the information. Thelma narrowly missed being caught by Jez as she takes a vial of liquid from Ella's deed box.
As Thelma makes her way home and Leon meets Tom to get money from him, Ella is left alone. Jez draws up outside her house.
As Ella sleeps Jez comes into the flat and tries to kill her. She wakes just in time and summoning what is left of her strength she manages to disable him by stabbing him in the neck with a pair of scissors. When she gets outside, however, she collapses. Leon and Thelma return to find her gone. Thelma finds her in an alleyway, but with no way of communicating with Leon she is stuck. A woman calls the police when she finds Ella's prone form. Leon gets there just in time to get her out of there before the police arrive but it's a close call.
Leon takes Ella to a grotty hotel. Ella tells Thelma that she's mortal now. She's in a bad way and eventually gives in to Thelma's pleas. Thelma puts some of the liquid from the vial into Leon's tea. It opens his spirit eye and suddenly he can see Thelma. He's not very happy about it. He's scared and confused. Thelma tries to talk him down. She's just beginning to succeed when she notices there is something wrong with Ella. She has suddenly aged over 50 years and now looks seventy years old.
Meanwhile Perie is in bed with Malachi. She explains how she was one of the women the fallen angels fell in love with, the reason they were thrown into the abyss. That's why she is destined to walk the earth, never finding happiness. However she looks fairly happy when she tells Azazeal that she's doing a good job of keeping his son occupied...
Ella explains that now she is mortal, she's ageing and will soon die. There's only one thing they can try in order to save her. Her father told her about it. If she's killed before she dies of old age, she can be brought back to life having passed through the realm of the dead. Leon's starting to rapidly lose his sense of humour about the whole thing, but he agrees to go to help.
He goes to Max, who's not too happy to see him after he found his flat trashed and the police knocking around. Leon tells him Ella's in real trouble. Max is still dubious but takes Leon to the hospital where he has a contact. The contact is a porter who can let them in to a decommissioned ICU unit.
Leon and Thelma rush back to Ella. She's collapsed and now looks more like a hundred years old. They are running out of time.
Meanwhile Max returns home to find Jez is waiting for him. As Leon and Thelma rush Ella to the hospital, Jez, Azazeal and Perie the Faerie torture Max. They chop off his ear and threaten him until he reveals that Leon and Ella were heading to the hospital. Then they torture him more. When they have finished, Malachi kills Max. He tells him it's for the best, Azazeal will never let him go.
Meanwhile Leon and Thelma have sneaked an unconscious Ella into the abandoned ICU unit. Leon smothers Ella as Thelma prepares a defibrillator to bring her back to life. But Perie the Faerie has got there before then and disabled the equipment. It looks like its curtains for Ella. Thelma gets Leon to zap Ella with the Volta, in the hope that the electric bolt will restart her heart, but it doesn't seem to work. However just as Perie the Faerie thinks her work is done, Ella springs up. She's fully restored to her seventeen-year-old self. She telekinetically attacks Perie with a load of syringes before zapping her with the Volta. When Perie is reduced to her faerie light form, Ella sprays her with aerosol and sets fire to her. Perie is reduced to faerie dust.
Ella and Leon return to the hotel where things turn passionate between then. Leon seems to have realises there are advantages to dating a 500 year old witch. However, meanwhile, Malachi watches Medenham, his new Kingdom...
Episode Twelve: Noir
Thelma breaks the news to Leon and Ella that Max has been tortured and killed. Ella is furious and despite Leon's protestations she says she's going to take the war to them. She immediately gets into training and it's clear that she's intent on vengeance.
Ella, Leon and Thelma sneak back into school just in time to overhear Sir Ralph announcing to the staff that Jez will be their new headmaster. He has no idea where Ella is, however, or that's she's on her way to get him.
Leon asks Sir Ralph and Jez if he can come back to the school, claiming that Ella has gone away without him. Meanwhile Thelma and Ella spy on them from one of the secret passageways with which Medenham is riddled.
Azazeal wants to know if it's safe for Malachi to go to the school. Jez claims it is, but Azazeal wants him to torture Leon to find out Ella's whereabouts. Jez orders Leon to come to extra kendo practice in order to do what he is told. Malachi, meanwhile, doesn't want to wait for Jez to tell him the coast is clear. He's clearly not afraid of Ella, whatever his father might say.
Azazeal tries to tell Malachi that he will be leaving him soon. Azazeal has been called away by higher powers and this will be the last time he sees him, but Malachi isn't listening.
Leon confronts Roxanne about betraying him to Jez. She's unapologetic and Alex starts to turn against her. Roxanne goes straight to Jez but he's not interested in student politics, he's just after a quickie. Little does he know that Thelma's filming the two of them in their compromising positions.
Leon tells Ella that he's got to go and see Jez later for "extra training". She seems to have a plan, but first she tells Leon that he needs to bring Thelma's camera work to a wider audience.
Sir Ralph watches the video as Jez dons his kendo outfit and prepares to take Leon out. However, when he attacks the masked figure he thinks is Leon, the figure is more than able to handle him. Soon Jez is in trouble, desperate to know who his assailant is. Ella pulls her helmet off, before smashing Jez against the doors. Jez tries to make his escape but Malachi suddenly appears. He holds the doors shut while Ella strangles his father's creature. Ella is surprised at Malachi's actions, but she knows immediately who he is.
The next day Sir Ralph and David Tyrel discover Jez's body. Sir Ralph asks David to come back as headmaster. When David announces Jez's death to the school, all eyes turn to Roxanne.
Roxanne claims to David that she was manipulated. He doesn't seem inclined to believe her but he doesn't have much choice. Roxanne is horrified to find the other students watching the video of her having sex with Jez. Leon tries to hold out the hand of friendship but Roxanne's blames him for the video getting out. She's left completely alone.
Ella meanwhile prepares to kill Malachi. However Thelma notices that she is having doubts. Could Ella possibly be attracted to her nemesis? It certainly seems so when Malachi flirts with Ella in the gym. He seems very keen to get to know her better, and when he sees her with Leon, he makes an effort to find out where Leon hangs out.
While Ella makes final preparations for her attack on Malachi, Malachi himself joins Tom and Leon in a local bar. He buys them drinks and tries to undermine Leon's relationship with Ella.
Thelma, meanwhile, has seen the boys out while she was "window shopping" and returns to tell Ella that she has her chance – she can wait in Malachi's room and attack him when he comes home drunk. Ella does indeed sneak into his room but there she finds Azazeal. He tells her he's been ordered to leave Malachi. But he wants to say something to her first. Does she really want to kill his son, or is he perhaps a perfect fit for her, body and soul? Ella is left feeling confused – is Malachi her perfect man rather than her enemy?
Malachi returns to Medenham to find the Stone of Belial and a note from his father. Malachi is suddenly devastated at being left all alone in the world.
Leon stumbles back to Medenham and tells Ella that he could have pulled, but he didn't because he loves her. She looks less than impressed.
In the early dawn, Azazeal takes one last look at Medenham before leaving.
Malachi finds Thelma in the church, keeping a vigil for Cassie. He talks to her about her mother, genuine at first, but when Thelma won't tell him much he becomes angry and offensive. Thelma storms out and tells Ella that Malachi deserves to die and she must do it soon.
Ella goes to tell Malachi they have to get things over and done with once and for all. He pretends he thinks she means sex, but when she denies this he demands a duel, with swords. Ella agrees.
Thelma and Leon are worried as Ella goes off to duel with Malachi. She says she'll be fine.
She and Malachi meet in the school church. They duel as Malachi winds her up about taking her job of Anointed One so seriously. He's a good duellist and for a while it looks like an even battle.
But then Ella gains the upper hand. Malachi pulls out a second, concealed blade but Ella pulls out the Knife of Orokiah and Malachi knows he is beaten. She has him at knife-point. He dares her to kill him. But she can't do it. She pulls away without striking the fatal blow. He tells her she won't regret it…
Episode Thirteen: Where the Heart Is
Malachi approaches Thelma as she sits outside a café. He apologises for being rude to her about Cassie. He says she must be lonely. She says she's not falling for his charm. He asks her whom of the passers-by she finds attractive. She considers a couple of options, then points out a girl she likes. Malachi assesses her choice. Suddenly a car comes out of nowhere and smashes into the girl. Thelma looks on in shocked silence as people come running. Malachi tells Thelma to look the dead girl up. Thelma is appalled.
Leon surprises Ella with a birthday cake. It's her 446th birthday. Ella's taken aback, particularly when it becomes clear that Leon has organised a party that evening and everyone's invited, even Malachi. Leon says it was the least they can do, given that Malachi spared her life. It seems Ella's not told Leon the whole truth about their sword fight.
Malachi tries to persuade Ella to go on a proper date with him. He points out that the two of them are equals, they'll still be here when Leon and everyone else have gone. Could there really be a better fate? Ella resists him but it's clear he's getting to her. Thelma tells her to forget about him and enjoy her birthday.
That night all the gang go out for a meal at a Chinese restaurant. Leon's a bit drunk and Malachi is quick to point out that the conversation is a little childish. When Ella goes to get more drinks, she and Malachi toast with absinthe. Leon sees this and looks a little perturbed. By the end of the evening, Leon's really drunk and he makes a speech about his feelings for Ella. All the while Malachi stares at Ella, mocking Leon and offering more than a mortal ever could. It becomes too much for Ella and she storms out. Leon follows her and they row. Ella tells him she doesn't care about another year passing, and he shouldn't be talking about them settling down and having kids, because they never could. She tells him he has to find someone normal, she's no good for him anymore.
Ella leaves and gets into a mini-cab. She's lost in her own thoughts as the driver babbles on, until it becomes clear that he is taking her in the wrong direction. Ella tells him to turn round. He refuses and locks the doors. She tries to lift the locks telekinetically but he tells her that won't work. He takes her to some waste ground.
But instead of attacking her he tells her that she has been straying from the path and she must kill Malachi. She asks his name and he tells her he is the Archangel Raphael. He gives her a package and tells her it will help her to return to the straight and narrow. He tells her to remember whose side she is on – and that He is a jealous God.
Meanwhile Thelma goes to the morgue and finds Maya, now a ghost, hysterical next to her own dead body. Thelma tries to comfort her but Maya runs away. Thelma finds where she lived from the hospital computer.
The next morning Malachi continues his campaign to get Ella to go on a date with him. She rebuffs him but he is growing more confident. Ella opens the package that Raphael gave her. It's a cilice, a spiked garter worn on the thigh to stop lustful thoughts. She puts it on, but is interrupted by Leon.
Leon tells her that he's sorry the party didn't go so well, and that he doesn't want them to split up. He's so sweet that Ella can't resist getting back together with him.
Thelma goes to Maya's house and finds Maya trying to communicate with her mother. Maya soon realises it's hopeless and collapses into tears. Thelma comforts her as Maya starts to realise that she truly is dead. Thelma gets her to see that being dead is not so bad. Maya is grateful for her help and support.
Meanwhile Malachi winds Leon up in the canteen to the point where Leon hits him. Malachi doesn't fight back, and David sees the whole thing. Leon is fired up and unrepentant. David suspends him. Leon is shocked and upset, given that it's not a good time for him to be away from Ella.
Ella is unaware that Malachi has engineered Leon's suspension. She promises Leon she'll be waiting for him when he comes back, but as she sees Leon off, Malachi appears once again to tell her that the two of them should be together. He asks her to reconsider going on a date with him and tells her not to say no just yet.
As Thelma and Maya arrange to meet later, Malachi watches. Thelma is upset to see him there. Malachi tells her he wants her help to convince Ella to go on a date with him. Otherwise Maya might just find out how she died. Thelma is upset but does as she's told, convincing Ella that it's not so bad to go on one date with Malachi.
Ella turns up at Malachi's room. He tells her to open her coat and looks her up and down before telling her she'll do. He informs her he is taking her to someone else's century for their date, as he holds up the stone of Belial. He takes her to a nightclub in 1928 Berlin. Perie the Faerie is a singer there, and Ella thinks it's a trap, until Malachi reassures her that the Faerie doesn't know who she is yet – and won't until 2005. Ella starts to relax.
Meanwhile Leon has broken back into Medenham via the secret passageways. Thelma is reluctant being his guide and leaves him to his search for Ella, telling him not to tell Ella that she helped.
Malachi tells Ella that he has no intention of following the plan which higher powers have for him. Meanwhile, Perie the Faerie talks to a gentleman who we will come to know as Mephistopheles. He waits for a moment when Malachi is alone, then tells him that he's got a job to do. Malachi is surprised at first, then tells Mephistopheles that he just wants to have some fun, rather than win over the hearts and minds of men. Mephistopheles seems disappointed. He leaves Malachi and Ella to it.
As Malachi and Ella get closer in 1928, back in the present Thelma and Maya are also becoming the best of friends. However Thelma's piling lie upon lie as she tells Maya that she herself was killed by cancer. Her "bravery" only serves to make Maya like her more.
Leon has trailed the secret passageways looking for Ella. He ends up at Malachi's room where he's astonished to see the Archangel Raphael, who allows him to travel back to 1928 to stop Ella getting it on with Malachi. Leon finds himself in a corridor and ducks into a room to change his clothes to something more fitting. However the Faerie comes in and mistakes him for a client.
Things are getting steamy between Malachi and Ella and they make their way upstairs. They find an empty room. Passionately they start to undress. But then Ella catches Leon's eye in a mirror. He's standing in a cage, left there by the Faerie, wearing only his boxer shorts and a soldier hat. Ella rushes out without explanation. Malachi tries to follow her. Leon is left wondering if she was going to go through with sleeping with Malachi. Mephistopheles watches it all with interest.
Episode Fourteen: Doomed
Ella wakes up in her bedroom. Malachi wakes up in the Weimar Republic, Berlin 1928. Leon sits at the end of Ella's bed. Mephistopheles sits at the end of Malachi's bed. Leon asks Ella if she was going to shag Malachi. Mephistopheles asks Malachi what he thought he was doing. Malachi says he was trying to get laid. Leon asks Ella if she wants to be with Malachi. Ella's silence says it all. Mephistopheles tells Malachi that there will be consequences to his actions.
Leon's is welcomed back to school and seems to be ok with Malachi and Ella. David is teaching a class about Germany between the wars. Malachi and Ella get the giggles and have to leave the classroom. They flirt, and Ella apologises for running out on him. She tells him that she thinks she and Leon have split up. Later, Ella visits Leon to check if he has in fact dumped her. Leon is very composed, and tells her he did dump her, as he realised things were never going to work out.
Meanwhile Thelma is at the crossing where Maya was killed, struggling with her conscience and wracked with guilt. She watches Maya's funeral from afar. Maya also watches as her body is lowered in to the ground, unaware that Thelma is there. Later Thelma catches up with her. Maya's furious that Thelma wasn't there at the funeral. Thelma tells her she got scared. She wins Maya round and they kiss amongst the gravestones.
Malachi and Leon train with the football team while Alex and Ella watch. Again, Leon seems remarkably composed with his ex's new love. Malachi flirts with Ella after the match, but then Alex points out that Ella has a huge spot brewing. In the bathroom, Alex lends Ella her concealer. She tells her that she thinks Ella made a mistake splitting up with Leon, and that Leon still loves her.
Ella returns to her room and her thoughts turn to Malachi.. Her phone rings. It's Malachi. He invites her out to a picnic. When she gets there he has put on a full spread, champagne, the works. But as he tells her that her outfit would look better off, Ella feels strange. Malachi turns round to realise that she has fled. Back in her room Ella looks in the mirror. Her face is covered in hideous boils.
Malachi bangs on Ella's door but she slams it open and runs away before he can see her. He searches for her, but finds only Alex who is keen to get his attention. Meanwhile Ella seeks out Raphael who tells her that the boils are a punishment for straying from the path. To get rid of the boils she must banish her shameful, unnatural lust.
Thelma is enjoying a lust-filled evening with Maya. They make love in public, safe in the knowledge that no one can see them. But as they lie in post-coital bliss, Thelma notices a mark on Maya's neck. One that looks uncommonly like the one on Malachi's neck.
Malachi is still searching for Ella, in vain. When he returns to his room he finds Mephistopheles waiting for him. Mephistopheles tells him that he will get his punishment too. Ella watches this from the secret passageways, bereft.
Malachi maintains a cocky air in front of Leon the next day. Leon tries not to react but when he returns to his room, all of his calmness evaporates and he starts to trash his belongings. He is stopped by the sound of a voice. It is Raphael. He tells Leon to be patient. He's been guiding Leon all along...
Malachi is shaving. Suddenly he doesn't seem to be able to see his face, or his razor. He starts to panic, but is stopped by the appearance of Thelma. Just as suddenly he can see again, and is relieved. Thelma asks him about Maya's mark. Malachi says it means property of Malachi. Thelma is furious and upset. Malachi tells her she'll get over it.
As Thelma heads away from Malachi's room, Ella calls to her from the secret passageways. Surprised, Thelma meets her in the cellar and is shocked to see Ella's hideous, boil-covered visage. Ella tells her she needs food and water. She asks Thelma how bad she looks. Thelma tries to lie, but Ella can tell from her reaction that it must be pretty bad. Thelma tells her to forget about Malachi, he's not worth it, but when Ella questions her vehemence she has to backtrack.
Meanwhile Malachi loses his sight during another football training session. He runs into a goal post and knocks himself out. The school nurse puts his eyesight problems down to concussion but it's clear that his total blindness is down to something more than that. Alex comes to visit him. Realising he is blind she kisses him. Malachi kisses her back until he realises it's not Ella. He turns Alex away, and cries out for Ella. In the cellar, Ella cries her eyes out as she listens to his calls.
Mephistopheles pays Malachi a visit and tells him that his blindness is a consequence of his lustful actions with Ella. He tells him he must forget about Ella if he wants his sight to return.
Meanwhile Raphael tells Ella the same thing. He says there is another man in her heart, a better man: Leon. And if she chose him the boils would disappear.
Maya and Thelma go on another date. Maya has a scarf covering the mark on her neck. She guesses that Thelma knows something about it. When Thelma denies this, Maya storms out, demanding that Thelma find out why the mark is there.
Thelma returns to Ella. They both wonder why they are punished for love. Malachi finds an entrance to a secret passageway in his room and crawls in, calling for Ella. Ella makes Thelma promise that she won't tell Malachi where she is.
Raphael tells Leon that Ella is now ready for him. Leon runs down to the cellar. He looks through a grate. For the first time he sees Ella covered in boils. He is horrified and has to run out.
Meanwhile Thelma goes to Malachi. She tells him she can't get used to the mark. He's got other things on his mind, but when he tells Thelma he's blind, she says he'll take him to Ella, in return for removing the mark.
Leon pulls himself together and heads back inside. He's not going to let the boils put him off Ella. But Thelma is leading Malachi down to the cellar, making him promise he'll get rid of the mark. Malachi gets to the cellar first. He tells her he's blind but he knows she's afflicted too. She says they were warned.
Leon rushes to the cellar but as he does so...
Ella and Malachi take a chance on the consequences and give in to their love for each other. They kiss. There is a flash of blinding light around Medenham. Raphael is blinded by it. Mephistopheles plays chess and when he sees the light he smiles.
Episode Fifteen: You Lose
Ella is demurely dressed, clearly having tried on every item of clothing she possesses. Thelma is surprised at her choice of outfit. It's not very practical for fighting monsters. But Ella isn't listening. In fact she doesn't seem to be able to see Thelma at all. Thelma is worried.
Ella goes to sit with Malachi, Alex, Tom and Leon. She apologises to Malachi for keeping him waiting, then snogs him in a totally inappropriate fashion. She's talking absolute rubbish about being the luckiest girl alive. Malachi sees his mark upon her neck and frowns.
Malachi confronts Mephistopheles and accuses him of wanting him to shag Ella all along. Mephistopheles tells him that the reverse psychology has worked rather well. Ella is now neutralised. She thinks she's just a normal 17-year-old and Malachi is just the man she wants to please most. Malachi has also changed too...
Malachi experiments with his new toy, getting Ella to carry his books for him. He seems to have lost all of his previous love for Ella now that they are together. Thelma and Leon are disgusted by his behaviour. Leon tells Thelma to meet him later so they can come up with a plan to rescue Ella.
Thelma takes Maya shopping at the morgue. The mark has gone from Maya's neck and Maya apologises to Thelma for freaking out about it. Maya's not keen to get rid of her clothes by stealing new ones from the dead, particularly when the first drawer they open reveals a smelly old tramp. Finally they find a beautiful girl. Maya is very taken with her and Thelma gets jealous. Maya laughs at her.
Raphael visits Leon and tells him that the real Ella is still within her somewhere. He has to kill Malachi to release her. Leon doesn't think he'll be able to do it as he's just a mere mortal, but Raphael tells him there are ways round that. Leon's determined to do it, to stop Ella being an automaton.
Malachi continues to treat Ella like a servant, whilst flirting all the time with Alex. However Ella tells Leon that she's happy now, she feels less stressed. Leon is upset to see her like this.
Thelma gets Maya to burn her old clothes. They both have new outfits. Maya asks if there is anyway for them to die properly. Thelma says no. However when she returns to Medenham, Leon tells her he's going to kill Malachi. Thelma remembers there is one way for her and Maya to die. If Malachi is killed, they disappear too.
Mephistopheles tells Malachi that he is now gaining in power and will continue to do so as he corrupts the hearts and minds of man. Every person has a desire so deep that if it is granted it would take over their very being. He must feed that desire and corrupt their souls, thus destroying God's creation. Malachi seems to like the idea.
Thelma's worried and goes in to Ella's dreams to see what is going on. She finds that Ella is dead in her dreams. She tells Leon that this is not right. You can't die in your dreams. Leon has been preparing for his fight with Malachi. He intends to use St. John's Wort to disable Malachi, before killing him. Thelma is not too enthusiastic and Leon realises she will die when Malachi dies. He asks her what he should do. Thelma gives him her blessing to do the deed.
However Thelma then meets up with Maya who is sweet and playful. Thelma tries to tell her that they're both going to die but Maya mistakes her intentions. She thinks Thelma's going to confess to having another lover. Thelma reassures her there's no one else, it's just she doesn't want to lose her. Maya tells her nothing bad is going to happen. Thelma can't bring herself to tell the truth.
Malachi, Alex, Tom, Leon and Ella sit outside again. Malachi tells them all not to go to class but to have some fun instead. He tells Tom that he must be in need of some female company and offers Ella to him. Leon looks on shocked, and at a distance Mephistopheles seems almost saddened by the scene. Meanwhile Roxanne of all people is the only person to turn up to class and David isn't happy. Outside Ella is about to snog Tom under Malachi's instructions. Leon can barely control himself and is hugely relieved when David comes outside to break up the action. He takes them inside for a lesson on Blake's 666: The Number of the Beast.
Mephistopheles meets Malachi later and tells him that he is becoming stronger. He doesn't seem to approve of Malachi's tactics, and has become saddened by what he is encouraging Malachi to do. However Malachi is only pleased when Mephistopheles informs him that the souls of men will nourish him, they are doing so already. He throws a stone at Malachi, who stops it in mid-air. He couldn't do that before.
Leon searches for the knife of Orokiah in Ella's room. Thelma tries to hide it from him, suddenly unwilling to die and never see Maya again. But in the end she relents. Leon finds the knife. He fills a bottle of bourbon with St. John's Wort, as per Raphael's instructions. Raphael sends him on his way.
Meanwhile Thelma says goodbye to Ella before meeting Maya for the last time. Maya has brought her a present. Thelma says she has to tell her something, but before she can Maya tells Thelma that she loves her. Taken aback, Thelma says she loves her too.
Malachi says it's a bit early for bourbon when Leon turns up so they drink beers. Leon tries to put Malachi at ease by telling him he wants nothing to do with the supernatural world anymore. Meanwhile Thelma looks at a sleeping Maya and comes to a decision.
As Malachi goes to get ice, Thelma intercepts him. She tells him that Leon is planning to kill him and he mustn't drink the bourbon. Malachi mocks her for the fact that she's his servant, now that she has something to live for. Malachi returns to Leon.
Malachi gets Leon hammered on the bourbon whilst pouring his own measure away. Leon is soon passed out. Malachi leaves the room and locks the door. Mephistopheles is perturbed when Malachi is determined to kill Leon. As Leon sleeps, we become aware of something else in the room. The Nephelim Sariel, sent to do Malachi's dirty work for him.
Episode Sixteen
Jo returns to the school and is greeted by David, who is pleased to see her. However when she reaches her room, who should be waiting for her but Malachi. He tells her she's late. She smiles. Clearly there's more to her return than meets the eye.
Ella is training with Leon. She's furious with Thelma for dropping them in it. She decides she has to find Thelma and find out why she did it. Then she'll kill Malachi, but she must give Thelma the chance to explain before consigning her to oblivion. Meanwhile Thelma sits sobbing in the cellar, clutching her present from Maya, utterly miserable.
Malachi and Alex are clearly a couple but Malachi has already turned his attention to Roxanne. However she seems to have undergone some kind of transformation and doesn't respond to his advances. Meanwhile Alex is telling a group of pupils how they should give into their deepest darkest desire...that way they'll find true freedom. Alex has the mark of Malachi on her neck and it's clear she's anything but free when Malachi comes along and tells her he has a job for her.
Ella goes to find Thelma in the cellar, but she's not there. Instead she finds Alex looking around and sees the mark of Malachi on her neck.
Ella tells Leon what she sees. She thinks that the mark means Alex is Malachi's possession, his succubus. They follow her and are shocked to see her talking to Thelma. Alex tells Thelma she wants her to do a job.
Thelma sneaks up on Roxanne when she's asleep and goes into her dreams. She is gobsmacked to discover that Roxanne is dreaming about being a nun...
Meanwhile Leon has followed Alex to Malachi's room, where he's in bed with Jo. They invite Alex in too.
Thelma waits for Maya at a café. Maya's full of the joys, and when Ella plonks down between them it's clear Maya thinks she can't see them. Thelma is shocked, however. When Maya goes, Thelma begs her not to say anything. However as soon as they are alone, Ella goes off on one. How dare Thelma do that to her and Leon, and all for a shag. Thelma points out that Ella isn't exactly innocent in that department. Ella is forced to calm down and they have a frank discussion. Thelma agrees that Malachi should die, and she with him. She can't bear living this lie anymore. Ella's resolve to kill Malachi is strengthened even further.
Thelma sits with Maya waiting to die as Ella goes to stab Malachi with the knife of Orokiah. However when Ella tracks him down in the shower and tries to stab him, the knife glances off him in a flash of light. It gets nowhere near him.
Ella returns to Thelma and Leon and tells them it didn't work. Thelma is worried. Malachi tells Jo he's going to kill Ella immediately for daring to make an attempt on his life. Jo says it would be more fun to destroy everyone she cares about instead...
Ella has a run-in with Alex in the bathroom and realises that the mark means Alex is nourishing Malachi – she's a succubi, the reason he has more strength. She decides she has to kill Alex. However in the canteen, Malachi has raised his game with Thelma, telling Maya that he's a ghost. Thrilled, Maya is also delighted when she gets the mark of Malachi back. Thelma is at the end of her tether. Little does she know that Ella has seen Maya with the mark.
Ella now knows she has two succubi to kill. Leon wants to help. Ella is sceptical but agrees he can kill Alex. She is easier as Maya is a ghost and getting rid of her means digging up her corpse….Ella has to keep quiet about the plan to Thelma, lest she betray them to Malachi again. It's heartbreaking when Thelma decides she's going to tell Maya the truth in the hope that they can move on.
Meanwhile Malachi is intensifying his attention on Roxanne, and Alex clearly has Tom in her sights for some reason...
Ella goes to the graveyard and prepares Maya's body. Leon, axe in hand, waits for Alex to go to sleep. Thelma tells Maya the truth. Maya is furious but just as she is about to forgive Thelma, Ella severs her corpse's head and Maya disappears. But Leon's been unable to go through with his part of the plan…As Thelma frantically searches for Ella, Leon sits cradling his useless axe. Meanwhile Ella steams into Malachi's room, thinking she can seize her chance to rid the world of him once and for all. But when she gets there, Malachi reveals Alex is still alive... And there are several more succubi. If she wants to kill him, she'll have to kill the whole school.
Episode Seventeen
Alex is making the most of being Queen Succubae, having recent recruits Kimberley and Imogen paint her nails. But when Imogen leaves she is set upon by Ella, who kills her by decapitation. Leon can only look on, shocked.
As Ella washes the blood off herself in the shower, Leon asks what her plan is. It's clear that, since he failed to kill Alex in the previous episode, Ella has lost her respect for him. She doesn't want him to help her killing the succubi as he isn't a killer – he can't see that they're no longer human beings.
When Ella returns to her room she finds Jo apparently searching for something under the bed. Ella demands to know what she's doing. Jo says they've got a problem with mice… she gets out of there sharpish but Ella is left with a distinct sense of suspicion.
Leon's trying to work out what Ella's plan is. She hints she might be going after Jo, but leaves half way through the conversation. Malachi winds Leon up about her dismissive attitude.
Ella goes to find Thelma, who's incredibly angry with her for killing Maya. Thelma asks how many more people will have to die. Ella can't answer her.
As the boys play football, Malachi winds Leon up some more and is very matey with Tom. Leon's not happy about this. Meanwhile, Ella is watching as she sees Jo acting suspiciously. She's using one of the school computers to do something with the school funds…
Leon has a go at Tom for sucking up to Malachi. Tom tells Leon that he doesn't think Ella is good for him. Leon takes this badly, seeing it as suspicious. Has Tom become an incubi?
But when Leon tries to tell Ella of his suspicions, she gives him short shrift.
More worryingly, however, is Thelma knocking on Malachi's door. She explains she's furious with Ella and asks if Malachi would have a use for her… of course he says yes.
Malachi sends Thelma into Tom's dreams to find out his deepest, darkest desire. Thelma's surprised to find an idyllic country love scene… between Tom and Leon. Clearly Tom's in love with Leon and his deepest, darkest desire is to be with him.
Meanwhile Leon's trying to convince Ella that he can help her in her fight against Malachi's minions. She's still resisting his help. He asks her if she thinks the two of them will ever get back together. She says no, and Leon is clearly gutted.
Malachi continues to wind Leon up about Ella's indifference towards him. But it seems Thelma might have the upper hand when she lies to Malachi about what she saw in Tom's dream. Clearly she's not really on Malachi's side after all. But Leon sees her coming out of Malachi's room and thinks the worse…
Things take a turn for the worse when Ella sees David Tyrel being led off the a police car. He tells her there's been some confusion over the school funds. Jo's obviously set him up to get him out of the way. As he is he driven off, Malachi and Jo get it on in his office as they plan the end of term festivities. Clearly they're expecting everyone to be turned soon…
Thelma and Ella discuss their next move. Ella's determined to keep as much as possible from Malachi, for his own good. She even thinks they should keep Tom's fantasy a secret. Unfortunately Leon walks in just as they are discussing this and is deeply offended when Ella won't tell him what is going on – and that they didn't tell him Thelma had become a double agent.
Tom tries to apologise to Leon, but he's more suspicious than ever now and refuses to buy it. Meanwhile Malachi seems to have moved on to Roxanne, to whom he's paying a great deal of attention. However Roxanne seems to have converted to Christianity and become obsessed with self-denial.
When Malachi talks to Alex and Tom later, it's clear his behaviour towards Roxanne is part of some wider plan. But then he turns on Tom, questioning him about Ella and Leon. Tom says Leon would do anything for Ella. Malachi seems pleased.
Leon's not pleased though when he goes to collect his CDs from Ella's room. She interrupts him. He asks her if he'll ever be her equal. She tells him that he won't, and he shouldn't want to be, but it's clearly all that Leon wants and he leaves disappointed.
But in the meantime Malachi is taking a very drunk Tom to bed. As Tom passes out, Malachi gets a marker pen out and starts to draw the mark of Malachi on his neck.
When Leon returns to his room, he sees the mark on Tom's neck and clearly thinks he's turned, just as Alex and the other pupils have. Suddenly he has an opportunity to be Ella's equal. He sneaks into her room and collects a sword. Marching back to his room, he pulls the sword out, lifts it high above Tom's neck… and brings it crashing down. Tom awakes just in time to see his fate.
The next morning Leon takes Ella breakfast in bed. She's pleased, but there's definitely something different about Leon today. What it is becomes clear when we see him with Malachi. Leon's got the mark of Malachi on his own neck. Malachi gives him an assignment to do… involving Ella.
Leon leaves a chemist, clutching a bag, then crushes up the St John's Wort he has purchased and puts it in a drink. This he gives to Ella as she trains. Soon it has the desired effect. Ella collapses, weakened by the St John's Wort, which is poison to her. Leon's well and truly a succubi as he ties Ella up. He searches the Book of Orokiah and finds out how to kill an Anointed One. He has to bleed her to death.
Thelma walks into the middle of this. Ella tells him that killing his friend has made Leon her equal – and made him an incubi of Malachi's. Leon gets rid of Thelma, but not before Ella has mouthed at her to get the Volta, previously stolen from her room by Jo.
As Thelma rushes off to search for the Volta in Malachi's room, Jo and Malachi dispose of Tom's body. Leon starts to bleed Ella and time is running out, but Thelma can't locate the Volta. Ella regains some of her telekinetic power, enough to undo a strap, but it's not enough to escape…. Thelma continues to frantically search… but just then Malachi walks into the room. Thelma locates the second Volta piece and fires the weapon at Malachi.
All the succubi react to the Volta blast. Malachi grabs his shoulder in pain, as does Alex…. as does Leon. It distracts him enough for Ella to release herself from the bonds and smack him round the head with a pot. He's out cold.
As Thelma bursts into the room, Ella has Leon under control. Ella tells her Leon is turned. Thelma says she's still there… Ella says that's good, because she may be the only one left.
Episode Eighteen
It's the end of term at Medenham - or as the sign now says, The End Of Days. As Malachi and Jo walk through the school we see that's it's not completely given over to debauchery and the Mark of Malachi. Malachi's no longer worried about Ella - for some reason it's Roxanne he's worried about now.
Ella and Thelma have problems of their own to contend with. Leon's in a cage but he's still an incubi and he's being rather monstrous. But they have a plan. They drug him with sleeping pills so that Thelma can go into his dreams. Once there, she must wake him up by playing on his greatest fear… Thelma takes out a knife and makes to castrate him… which does the trick and Leon wakes up. He's back to his old self, but he's got lots of questions….
Ella has to tell him that Tom is dead and Leon himself killed him. Leon is furious that Ella has led him to this pass through her lack of trust and obsession with killing. He tells her that all he wanted was for her to love him. But she's been killing for so long that she's forgotten what love is. He leaves.
Meanwhile Malachi is busy sucking up to Roxanne. She's managing to resist - however it's clear he's got a sinister motive.
Ella has to pull herself together after Leon's damning indictment. She tells Thelma that she has a cunning plan to thwart Malachi. But Thelma has an important part to play. Thelma returns some time later dressed….as an angel.
She spikes Roxanne's drink with some of the liquid that allows mortals to see the spirit world. Then, when Roxanne is praying in the church, she 'appears' to her. Roxanne is taken aback, particularly when Thelma introduces herself as Xenia, getting a little carried away with her role. But she manages to get Roxanne to buy that she's an angel…. And agree to do whatever she says.
Roxanne does as she's told. She goes to apologise to Malachi and invites him to meditate with her. While he's got his eyes closed she searches his room and steals the Stone of Belial. Thelma takes this to Ella. Ella's about to reforge the knife of Orokiah. To do so she must conjure a flame. Mastering her fear she must place her hands in the fire and use her negative emotions to make the knife whole again. It's extremely painful and Thelma can only watch Ella in torment… however the gamble is successful and the knife is rendered whole.
Thelma's still confused though - the knife shattered once, why won't it happen again? Ella takes the stone. She tells Thelma that Malachi might be strong now, but he was once as weak as a baby….
Ella uses the stone to travel back to hospital, when little Malachi was just a baby. She's going to kill him before he'd barely begun. But she doesn't reckon on the sentry posted there by Azazeal - Nurse Perie. Perie and Ella fight, and to begin with Ella gets the best of it. She's about to take advantage to strike down baby Malachi - but then Leon's voice runs through her head - "You've been killing for so long, you've forgotten what love is". Ella hesitates for a crucial moment… enough time to allow Nurse Perie to grab the knife from her and stab her in the shoulder. Grabbing the stone, Ella just manages to return to the present. To Thelma's shock she's mortally wounded. Things look bleak.
Meanwhile Leon is visiting Tom's grave. Tom appears to him as a ghost. Leon apologises for killing him. Tom forgives him and tells him to go back to Ella - she needs him. But Leon refuses.
Malachi tells Alex to dress like it's the last night of her life, as Jo and her henchmen drag Roxanne off from the corridor.
As Ella struggles to hang on to life, Leon is drowning his sorrows in the pub. But all is not lost - Mephistopheles finds him there. He tells him that Malachi is going to bring about the End of Days, when the Sons of Darkness will fight the Sons of Light. Leon asks what side he is on. Mephistopheles reveals that his eyes have been gouged out, his punishment for betraying hell. He tells him he has no stomach to fight, both sides are as bad as each other. The only thing left fighting for is human love.
As Malachi prepares for the final ritual and Ella asks Thelma to stay with her till the end, Leon sneaks his way back into Medenham, stirred on by Mephistopheles words. He reaches Ella just in time, and remembering some forgotten movie he decides to cauterize the wound with the Knife Of Orokiah. It works. Now it's time for them to get out of there.
As they flee, Malachi reveals his plan to a terrified Roxanne. She is truly God's creature. When he sacrifices her it will be a provocation to God, a call to arms to start a second war with heaven, The End of Days. Roxanne prays as Malachi sets light to the hall, then brings the sacrificial knife crashing down.
As Thelma, Leon and Ella run from Medenham, the school goes up in flames.
Ella wakes in a woodland glade, surrounded by strange stone covered in Enochian symbols. Leon is with her, they kiss passionately. But then Thelma interrupts. Leon tries to get rid of her, but Thelma seems keen to watch. It might be the end of the world, but this is the calm before the storm. However as Leon and Ella kiss, we see an Enochian A…and it's dripping blood.
